Hi folks, Recently i am facing 2 problem with my e30 m40. 1. The car is very difficult to start after not being driven for 2 days only, it use to be a month stationery and just one start everything is well. I had my battery checked, definitely not battery. What could it be? 2. During the morning, when car is just firing up, it is difficult to engage the gear. Manual in my case, and still very hard to engage having stepping on the clutch of course. Transmission will be smooth when car is moving for a few minutes. Any thoughts? Clutch worn out? Or gearbox kaputs? The engine is definitely due for an overhaul but does that cause the above 2 problem? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Regards

I have the same problem and my mech told me the clutch is wearing out. Another sign is that its hard to engage gears.

My experience with the starting problems was slightly different: The engine would splutter until warmed up. I checked numerous bit (idle valve, cold start sensor & control circuits, temp compensating air control valve, etc.). Finally, the problem identified to some moisture in the distributor cap, which was resolved by spraying WD40 into the rotating carbon bush.

As for your gear problem, possible areas are worn clutch pump, worn clutch (clutch plate, pressure plate and /or bearing) and worn synchro-mech (in gearbox). I had similar symptoms on my 1987 E30 M10. All 3 parts of the clutch assembly (clutch & pressure plates + bearing) were worn. Luckily, the straightforward replacement solved it all.

Hope these help. Mike
