Hello Folks.
I believe BMW Door's lock was not designed for frequent manual key usage.
Some says it's a kinda safety feature to just break off when someone tries to force open.
In my case, my remote isn't working. No spare key. So I've been depending on my 1 key to manually lock/unlock my car.
The lock finally gave up on me..Lucky me it gave up when i wanted to lock..Otherwise, It would have been a very expensive lesson for me.
Have been in touch with Bro Tweiboon to do a spare key. Will be meeting him up soon.
Symptom of the issue : when you key turns 180 degrees in the lock without any click, the lock component inside is broken.
I decided to unmount the door lock tumbler myself to see the severity of the damage.
Some broken mechanism was visible. Decided to buy the repair kit and DIY.
**2 POINTS TO TAKE NOTE;**
i) You just need to unmount the lock tumbler to do the job (top pic circled in red). Not the whole door panel.
Your key has to be in the lock at all times until ur done with the repair job.
Never never remove the key from the lock. You dont want to see the entire lock combination breaking a part when you
unmount it. Having the key in the lock with hold the lock combination together in its position.
ii) Be very careful when your loosen the bolt holding the tumbler (pic no2).
If you're careless, the bolt will drop inside..and you'll have to end up removing the entire door panel just to retrieve the bolt
pic 1 - remove the plastic cover with a flat head screwdriver..dig it from the middle..plastic is easy to crack.
pic 2 - the bolt will be visible in a slanted position.
pic 3 - Use an allen key to loosen it, Shake and pull the lock tumbler from outside simultaneously.
These are the components u get when you buy the repair kit.
**this repair kit is usable for both E46 and X5 models**
The broken part in my case was item 2. (item 2 & 3 looks same, but 1 of it is for left side and the other for right side..you will use only 1 of it)
All the components (except item 3) will be put into the chamber according to the numbered sequence.
This is how the chamber looks like inside;
Now, the most difficult part is putting item 4, 5 & 6 together..These 3 items will have to go into the chamber simultaneously.
**I'd recommend to re-use your old item 4. The old spring's coil is thicker and more solid den the new spring.**
You compress the spring(item 4) into the chamber, hold item 5 on top of the spring to ensure the spring remains compressed, and slide it item 6. Item 6 acts like a lock to hold item 5 in its position. Was too afraid the key will slide its way out while doing it, i took precaution to get my wife help me.
Item 7 is optional. Its a tiny pin, just to make sure item 6 sticks to its position. See the tiny circle in the above pic. That's where the item 7 sits. Factory assembled lock comes without item 7. So, if you see item 7 already in you car's lock, most probably someone has repaired it before you.
Sorry guys, i didnt bother taking any video of it..Too many videos about it in youtube. Should any of you face the same issue, I don't mind extending my help to assist you. It'll my pleasure. Just buy the repair kit and let me know. Cheers..
