My 520 24V just came out from the workshop and I'm now RM6,800 poorer. Not much done, just around the engine area.

transformed to............................MEGATRON!!!

beware of the ALLSPARK man..

I think I will put up the scaned pages of the reciepts and hope that the experts here can advise me.

when i got my e34 back in aug last year, i noticed that one of the fuses was melting, and that it was held in a separate 'holder', not in its normal slot in the fusebox. i got one electrician to put in into a proper fuse holder box in the hope that it will not melt. then later on, my aux fan died, and the mech said the ballast was busted, so he fixed a merc one, cos the bm ballast was not sold separately. I later found out that the merc ballast was better constructed in that it had a ceramic heat sink.

then, after a few months, the fan died again, and this time, the mech said had to change it. so, since i 'trusted' him, i paid 900 for it. well, it worked fine for a while.

then, after a few months again, the fan konked again. but i didnt realise it until i took it to the a/c guy to check, since the a/c didnt seem to be cold sometimes. well, he said there is some problem with the wiring, especially with the fuse that was in the holder. that fuse seemed too hot. so, he recommended another wireman to me.

fortunately for me, that wireman immediately found the problem. first of all, he said, the e34 tends to run really really hot in msia. and this meant that the aux fan had to work really hard. the original setup of the wiring and fuses couldnt cope with the extra load. so the fuse for the aux fan tends to melt. another problem he found with my car was that the previous owner had rewired the aux fan and a/c blower together, causing a double 'loop' (not sure what that means). this further caused the amperage to increase, thereby increasing the heat and meltdown of the fuses.

so, he fixed the wiring, used heavy duty wires and fuse holders, added three extra fuses, and also changed the temp sensor to a 85 deg from a merc (the bm one was 97deg). he also changed the ballast again to a merc one. there was no prob with the fan itself.

and now, my car runs cool, the clutch fan hardly kicks in, and i got more POWAH!

If possible, I'd like to put in a radiator as big as 535i's, that'll really cool things down...

dear bros..

i have a 96 525i local model...my problem seems to come almost altogether...hence alot of $$$ out at any one time... :62: but when there are no problemo..then   wooohooo..drives like a dream...

i have changed the radiator, fuel pump, cylinder head, aircond fan plus all the general maintenace..

nid to ask the bro experts here..
my "check control" now appears the following:
1) trans program = my mechanic changed a swith ..something bout the trottle switch..but light came on after a few days again
2) brake lt = my mechanic changed a switch below the glove compartment..but light came on after a few days again
3) esd regelt = dunno what is means
4) handbrake light is constanly on eventhough handbrake is down..may sensor?

tot of asking the bros here before see the mechanic

thanks bros..:top:

Mine, 525 1996

Mine is 525i 1996 bought Oct 2006.
(Previous 1986 520i, 'bumper besar' for 4 years)
Just after shake hand with last owner,
Trans Prog pops up.
1. Change 2nd hand 17in Alpine Alloy w tyres=RM2400
2. Engine drinks coolant, top overhaul(skim head)=RM2000
3. Change all lwr arms and steering linkage=RM1500
4. Change all 4 shocks=RM1000
5. Swap auto tranny (recond)=RM4000
5. Engine drinks coolant again, swap w second hand engine=RM5000
And of course still counting...

I bought mine in 2002, a 94 525 CKD M50 single vanos GM GB. Sold last month and still in great condition. Don't think I spend more than rm20k on the car in my 5 years of ownership, and that includes oil changes. I would have saved a lot if I didn't overhaul the gearbox, because of leaking oil. I'm thinking of keeping the car longer.

1st thing replaced by dealer, radiator, clutch fan, power steering box (leaking), & minor stuff like hood arms.

Things I replaced after was water pump, Air-cond service, engine and GB mountings, suspension arms and links/joints, vanos kit replacement, brake pads.

Only a year back that I need to replace petrol pump & filter, overhaul gearbox.

The good thing is, no need to touch the engine at all, aside from replacing spark plugs. I do change oil before its due though.

Like most who mentioned here, preventive maintenance is important. I ran the same set of tyres for 5 yrs although for 50k km only, with proper alignment and balancing. I don't see other parts can't last longer than that. I also don't have to replace an item 2x, and that tells a lot about the reliability of the car.

I'm not a DIY guy, so having a trusted mechanic that knows your car will help.

Happy hunting. Cheers.
