Bro eterna22, I got a couple of Qs pertaining to my rides...

1. 1996 E36 318, an old horse. Did open up the AFM and cleaned the "valve" & service the ECU. Response did improve a bit but I felt that some ponies have permanently dissappeared compared to 10-years ago. Sign of age?

2. 2005 E46 318 Lifestyle. I just changed to K&N air-intake and honestly I'm not sure whether it did increase the responsiveness. Never cleaned the AFM since it was bought! Ada bisness ka over here...

Kamarul, as for your E36, what valve did you clean ? not too sure what you are talking about. i guess 10 years is not considered old for a piece of engineering like that. i suspect engines are designed to last more than 20 years if maintained properly

E46 u change to knn replacement unit or the mushroom type? remember to oil the filter, so the slugs wont reach your AFM, otherwise, your AFM will be dirtier faster, as the knn wont filter as good as the original.

Anyone else has thrown away their K&N filters for some bad reasons? I just bought mine about 2 months ago.. label said apply the K&N oil to the filter only after 40,000km or so? If many people experienced the same thing as Bro 330Ci, I may need to consider thrash-canning the thing too... rugi $440 :20: :banghead: The thing is Made in :55: WTF! Will use the standard paper flter again then.

Three years ago, my 10-years-old E36 lost her horsepower significantly, felt like some lousy god knows what car, felt like it went to the wrong gear at the wrong speed and idling was really really crappy. I went to see Din, my mechanic at USJ, and asked him to change the AFM. Upon checking, he informed me that the price of a brand new AFM was $1,500  (couldn't remember exactly though). What he offered me was to open up the AFM which was not a standard practice by default, normally got to ganti the whole thing if rosak - I agreed, and then he cleaned up and straightened-up the mechanical "flapper" or "valve" (dunno what was it called) inside that 10-years-old still original Made in France AFM. Lo and behold, when I got my car back, the performance felt better. Even the fuel consumption improved again. Last year, my baby developed the same symptoms again. I thot it must be the AFM again and sent her to Din. He opened up the AFM housing unit again, confirmed the mechanical components still performed like how they should. He then open up the ECU and did something I did not know what for 2-days and finally, when my baby was returned, it behaved like UDM again. The machine is now 13-years-old. I really like the car and the thing I am not yet satisfied is that I don't feel like her performance is as tip-top as 10 years ago.

As for the E46, I changed to the K&N replacement unit two months ago. Instruction said oil the thing after 40,000km.. I only drove about 2,000km since then. What scare me now is that Bro 330Ci said he threw away his K&N unit after damaging his Air Mass Sensor!

Damaging MAF sensor because of K&N air filter?
I think its because the re-oil and cleaning part. New of course no problem, put it in only. Careful with the washing and re-oil part. make sure its is perfectly dry before putting it back.

Guys,

Actually the K&N filter is good, as it is re-usable and its durable.

The problem is, many people do not oil it. by Oiling it, it will reduce fine dust particles to escape the bigger pores from the element.

For me, original would be best, but thats just my preference :)
