IMHO,
The Landrover Freelander is a great little SUV but I've got friends who have them and their complain is the two things you mentioned.Parts are bloody expensive and resale value...hmmm,you know la mat salleh cars.On the other hand, the civic is a tried and proven car, parts reasonable, resale value like hotcakes. But if you decide on the Civic,go for the 2.0 bro.that damn thing can run la.i drove one on the highway and I was impressed.

I think it really depends on what she wants, after all, she's going to drive it but why the vast difference of choice? The two cars are world apart man.

My bro has a freelander for sale a 2 year old asking RM100k, can get the lastest Civic yr 06 around 80k?

I am more keen on the Civic as parts within my affordability and resale value.

Go for the civic bro, don't say I didn't warn you ah

Beemer is a great car but looking to reduce the maintainance cost hence considering Civic.

The Freelander TD4 is a nice economical (fuel-wise) SUV that has good off-road capability and a nice torque-y BMW diesel engine. But once you get it into the high mileage category, I think maintenance costs go up. My parents just sold their 2004 TD4 (around 160k km) because they complained about the maintenance and it broke down a couple of times. But that said, they went and bought the new Freelander 2, because they like the economy of the diesel, the torque, and its handling over rough ground (they use it frequently to enter kampung areas - over unpaved roads and non-roads).

I think for your needs, if you want easy to resell and easy to maintain - go for Civic. If you want fuel economy, the high seating arrangement on an SUV, plus the ability to drive through any city flood (max up to 1m, I think), then go for the Freelander.

For me, I would go for the Freelander but that's just me. :)

Thanks for all the inputs, I will test drive the freelander for evaluation before deciding. Any price gausge for a 3 year old Civic and freelander?

My parents mentioned someone offered 89k for their 5-year old Freelander, but they were asking for 90plus.. not sure what price they finally let go.. but probably around 90ish.

Oh ya, if you're thinking of the V6 petrol version, one of the owners once told me, the V6 is quite thirsty. I remember on the Land Rover Coterie drive to Koh Samui, all the V6s had to stop to refuel early, while the TD4s still had a lot of fuel left. Drove to Penang in the TD4, and only used up 1/3 tank (59L capacity). If you hypermile... I think 1000km/tank on the highway is definitely possible.

I have Land Rover at home......regret buy that lousy car. Better get old Beemer X5 or Mers ML.

If you want serious reliable car go for Civic or the same money you can spend to get second hand E46.

I own a Land Rover TD4, bought from new, it was last batch of Freelander Series 1's. Its the wife's daily driver - DU to KL every day. It also does multiple DU-KL-DU runs in any given day.

Have been relatively trouble free so far. Presently at 80k kms with 20k kms left to go before warranty runs out.

It starts every morning, no issues. It broke down once - battery exploded(!) it was a freak event which was fixed under warranty.

Warranty claims have been a breeze with auto connexion/sime darby keen to maintain owner confidence. You just need to ask.... and so far I've even got a plastic control knob changed under warranty.

The concern over high cost of parts is not unfounded.

Yes, PARTS ARE EXPENSIVE. Labour is too, but apparently there is a specialist in Batu Caves owners can consider when warranty runs out.... so that's one way to cut down on costs. Also put in perspective ....I think Landies are expensive in the same way Alfas and Volvos are (assuming you are buying ori parts from main dealers).

Generally speaking the 20k kms service interval will typically be around RM500-700 but can go up if something else needs changing. More often than not it will be the brakes, either the rotors or pads will need changing. Its a heavy car and if you travel in town most of the time brakes wear out quickly due to stop start traffic. If brakes are involved it MAY touch RM1000 or close.

The 40k kms is like an inspection 2 on bmws... so this is the biggie. It has touched RM2k plus for me before. For this one they will change ALL filters and oils (inc pollen and little filters here and there it adds up). Invariably brakes go around the same time as well so that adds up.

My concern will be the auto gearbox. It will likely be expensive for rebuild/new. But this is true of any large continental car. My only comfort is that they do change ATF filters and oil every 40k as mentioned above sao none of that sealed for life shit here. I dunno if there is an ATF cooler, that would help with longevity...... lets put it this way - daily driver + kl traffice + our hot climate + style of driving = all this conspire to kill the gearbox.... its only matter of time.

BOTTOM LINE

Judging from how you are fretting between the civic and the Freelander I'd say you are better ofF with the Civic.

The civic does everything very competently. Hard to beat.

You must WANT to buy a Freelander..... its a bit more difficult to justify.

For me? I'm waiting for the warranty to run out....

Thanks for the enquiry. With the TD4 we take power and torque from 110 BHP and 189 lb/ft to 140 BHP and 227 lb/ft. The upgrade is undetectable by Land Rover service and diagnostic equipment and can be carried out at your location. Cost £495+vat.

Kind regards
