The dreaded ABS warning popped up 3 times in the past month, but luckily I've reached the 50k Vehicle Check (full inspection) a month before my BSRI expires. Among other small things changed and software updates uploaded during the four-day stay, they changed my ABS pump! Failure of the ABS pump is a common problem, and it's something we can't do without because besides braking, the DCS depends on it, and therefore the 50:50 neutral handling of the car. Changing it at own cost would have cost more than RM11k.Strictly speaking, it's not a BSRI item, but because it was a scheduled vehicle check and my unit was still under BSRI, the goodwill warranty was readily approved. BSRI is really tops in my books, as I've had a good number of things changed for free in the three years. :top:Here's a tip for those of you who are in your third year of ownership, and warranty has expired. Try to reach 50k within your third year and send it in for the vehicle check. Anything that's failed or failing is very likely to be changed on goodwill by BMWM. :top: Be prepared to leave the car there for a few days.

wow...FOC for item cost Rm11k, my jaw dropped!

Pls share the symptoms of ABS pump failure...i once had DSC, Handbrake, ABS light triggered, could this be the tell-tale?

Yeah, very good eh? The trick is to leave the car there, telling them that they can keep it as long as they want, as I have other rides. If you rush them to finish within the day, they won't have time to go deep.

What can I say...my ABS warning came up three times in the past month, something like a week apart. It would go out if I switched off the engine and switch on again. My SA said it was starting to fail, and put in the goodwill warranty claim. My steering lock also came up once a few months ago, and I told him, so he reloaded the OBC software in the hope of preventing further trouble. The 50k vehicle check is an important and useful one.

BSRI is great undoubtedly. If only it last longer than 3 years. 4-5 years will be good.

man, lucky you have BSRI, sometimes, you wont what will happen...peace of mind.. should be at least 5 years...

11k is very expensive for a ABS unit....

I'm very fortunate indeed, given that the FOC unit has further warranty on it. :top:

Actually, the ABS Hydraulic module comes with an integral control unit, and is the heart of the DCS too. The 50:50 balance of the latter-day BMWs is not all due to weight distribution and suspension. A lot of it is due to the DCS too, which is braking individual wheels without your knowing it, to keep the car in balance when cornering. BMW and Porsche are masters in this field. On that score, 11k is pretty reasonable for the module. Except that it seems to be prone to failure after a few years.

This is the wonder of intentional setting lower expectation n then deliver as per original plan. The consumer continue to be suckered punch into believing it n stay on with the brand vs BMW give u straight 3yrs warranty to begin with. Actually it should be longer .... LoL.....

Don't agree with your train of thought. I think it's pretty darn good that they will willingly give goodwill warranty on known problem parts. We buy a BMW with the full knowledge that the warranty is only 2 years because we want their cars. If we can't live with that, we should buy another marque...like a Volkswagen with 5 years warranty.

Well said. I wish BMW Malaysia would just up their game and provide us the same standard 3-year warranty Mercedes, Lexus and Audi already does.

Perfectly ok to look at it that way...but its also very sad to have such parts failed given your mileage......with or without long warranty period....especially at the price that come with such image and brand prestige...

Mine already reached 45k km, and BSRI still has 1 year 2 months to go. my EC shows a car jacking up in another 14k km, does that mean, i'll have my full vehicle inspection at 59k km? which is 1k km before my BSRI or 60k km warranty due?
Damm.. i juz had my front brake pad changed with the BSRI so far.. ( and wipers and engine oil i suppose).
Would it be worthy for extending the BSRI program for RM2k plus? hassle free for another 2 years?

Buddy, nowhere in BMW's advertising or DNA does it say 'reliable'. We buy its other sought-after qualities, including image and brand prestige. We are all perfectly free to choose Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, and not to mention Toyota, all probably much more reliable cars. So why don't we? We get what we choose to get.

I'm sure it should be at 50k, but call your SC to check. In fact, I'm still only at 46k+, so you should qualify for the 'vehicle check' very soon. Now's a good time because you still have 2 months of full warranty left.

sure thing, thanks schwepps for reminding... will try to schedule a full vehicle check ASAP...

Wow!

Wow! You are pretty well-verse in this :top:

Thanks for the info

Electronic intervention is what enables the tail-heavy Porsche 911 to defy the laws of physics and handle like a supercar. Ditto the perfect 50:50 balance of all BMW cars. The ABS hydraulic module is not just a pump, and the physical cost of the pump and control module are just a small fraction of the total. The major cost proportion is the firmware, which contains BMW's closely-guarded DCS algorithms, which took billions to develop. As I'm in a related electronic automation business, I can relate to this. The major part of the cost is IP - Intellectual Property.

On that score, RM11k is quite cheap and that, and the fact that they're so willing to give goodwill warranty, is probably because they realise that the module is not as bullet-proof as it should be. That's always the automation engineer's nightmare.

Sigh..how come I dont know about the 50k vehicle check (full inspection)??!! Anyway I'm glad bf is in good hands and everything he walks out from the hospital..the SA would give him a clean bill of health. My current mileage is 65k.

You need to check your iDrive under Info Sources > Service > Service Requirements, to see what's coming up for replacement or checking. And I think I mentioned it to you when your BSRI was about to finish a few months ago. I'm sure I said that if your BSRI Vehicle Check is not due, then pay for it yourself because it's worth doing it. I think you just asked your SC to check your car then, but that's not an official 'Vehicle Check' where it has to be documented.

BTW, if your car has reached 65k, it's time to change the Automatic Transmission Fluid. That's the latest recommendation by BMWM, to change the ATF at 60k. It should cost you about RM800+.

hang on, if i read correctly, you guys are saying that we can extend our BSRI?
