hi allim thinking of giving my big, lazy, slow, eat-n-sleep-only e34 some motivation. some people will recommend to swap the engine to 1jz, sr 20, turbos; but i prefer to keep the authenticity of my UDM. in fact, my 18 year old m50 is fine, just need some viagra to boost things up. i've heard about aftermarket chips. the more i read i feel the less i know bout these chips. i dont know how many kinds of chips and the installation process. (ecu, stand alone, piggy back, computer box, tuned chip, remapping chip, tuning chip, dynoing chip etc) so i really appreciate if anybody, sifus and gurus would enlightened me with some knowledge.sometimes im wondering with my shallow knowledge, if these chips can perfom better than the original chip, why didnt the factory use it in the first place? :hmmmm:any enlightment, suggestion, recommendation will be appreciated. thanks

Factory tuning takes into account a safety net and also allows the use of lower grade fuels etc therefore it runs a safer less poweful tune. Most aftermarket chips require use of premium fuels.

S38B36 or S38B38 or M60 V8 ... :top:..

Power is subjective..

U can still gain some power from the M50 - over to you Ramsing ..

hi all

thanks for the responds. i had considered swapping to s38 or m60 v8, but that is too much in term of installing and maintaining. im just a regular teacher with a slim pocket. (i know u will say power cames with pocket damage$):4:

im aware that those engines have a lot more horses, but i just want few more horses for my existing m50. not demanding a smoking-screeching-spinning-tires-grunting-sound kind of engine. i am more into minor mod with decent extra horses. so aftermarket chips come in mind. or maybe other kind of minor mod.

any suggestions? :burnout:

thanks

point taken. thanks

1) What's your budget ?
2) This topic has been discussed couple of times already. Might be good for you to do search and THEN decide which path you wanna take.
3) Chipping alone might not be THE only solution. There are other factors as well ie type of wheels, size of tires, manual trans/auto trans, rear diff ratio, type of engine bla bla bla ...
4) It's not about having a slim pocket - if you know where to get/how to get.

thanks for the tips.

my car is '91 e34 m50b20 ckd manual trans and i dont know the diff ratio. ( is it written on the diff?)
its ride on 8.5x18 in wheel. 235/40/18 front and rear.

im willing to throw 3-4k in return of few horses.
i did some search and thinking about chips or headers. but this is not final decision. still can be rachuned. kakakaka:43:

change (borrow / swap ) your 18" to 17" - u will notice the diff.

I personally think 17" is the best setup for the E34 (again - personal preference)

The best bang will be to upgrade to the M50 2.5 .. U are running on manual trans - that alone is a bonus .

Chipping can only gif u a small amount ..

I'll go for torque and not hp .

What i'll do in yr situtation is:

1) change exhaust headers - might as well change the whole exhaust system right to the back

2) change to BMC / open pod filter

3) smaller rims

4) re-chip

If you have more budget planned then take a bigger route...definately more satisfying...but the above would be a good start...my 2 cents.
Cheers!

Oh most welcome. For item 2, you can just call up Exoticmods (shedden) for the BMC or any other shops for K&N open pod filters. Just tell them yr car specs and it shd be as fast as pay cash n bolt on.
They are washable hence giving you better value for dollar and generally have better air intake. The better the air intake flow the better the performance you'll have. Slight gain on hp and don't expect anything that much.
When i had my BMC on it felt a quicker response...good feeling...
hope this helps...

+1. that's what i did. i went from M50 non-vanos 2.0 to 2.5. exhaust systems and chips not cheap and doubt it'll do as much compared to the additional displacement.

lots of sifu's here who can give very good advice. but the rule of thumb is that with great power comes great loss of $$$ :D

like what unker 535i said, change to 17' rims and you will feel the difference. 18'" is only when you're running like unker 535i power level.... :O

antiquer.....M50B20 got a lot of potential. plus u're a manual box. but to just chip it, wont be much of an increase. a good bang for buck with little/no maintenance, is to stroke to 525/528/530/532. an increase in CC, with a chip, freer flowing exhaust, etc etc would be a nice gain, plus no worry on maintenance. cost wise, wont be between 2-3k, will be more. you can do it in stages. thats the fun part. :)

otherwise just turbo it like fandango said. if you're happy with 250rwhp, you can just slap on a turbo, get it tuned and you're good to go :)
