I think my battery finally gave up life after 8 and a half years, the battery light just came on about 10 minutes ago. Alternator just changed in June 2010 (oem) so shouldnt be that?

What battery should I be replacing the original one? The thing is I'm now in Sungai Petani so might not have so many choices, but what are the suggestion and prices?

I've no experience whatsoever with batteries, so will need advises here.

No need to buy original BMW battery. Just the ordinary maintenance free one will do.

A local BMW mechanic suggests DIN100. He has Yokohama and GP.

Correct ones?

Either one will do and check e39 maintenance thread for reference on batteries prices.

Turns out its the alternator again. The old trusted original BMW battery lives on. So I'm changing my 14 months old alternator (not sure what brand) changed in Scotland last year. Perhaps an ayam brand alternator.

Changing with a Bosch alternator at Jackson Conversions, SP. RM1180 Bosch alternator with RM150 labour.

Total RM1330.

My wife just gave birth to my second son this morning at 7.12am. Both mum and baby seemed fine but still awaiting further checks.

I guess no TT for me for a while then..

Congrats bro..

Bro , is yours dry or wet cell ? .. most of the time the wet one will last longer if taken care . The dry one , although free maintenance , will die faster . 8 years serving you , should be wet cell i guess. But at the same time , i heard wet cell fluctuate on the current output. Dry cell is much stable. This is what i heard from the battery guy and i want to change mine to dry cell as well ( free maintenance ) . He mentioned DN 88 is good enough , but since u have many gadgets in ur car,, why not DN 100.

Bro mine is dry cell maintenance free DIN88 (was told by the mechanic just now). Original BMW. I'll upload a picture of it later.

He also advised to change to DIN100 if I need to change it later.

The new Bosch alternator that was changed this afternoon was actually an original BMW alternator, made by Bosch in a Bosch box, but still bearing the BMW logo:

So hoping this time it would last longer than the last cheap unbranded one:

And this is the old original BMW battery in my car:

I don't get a new baju raya this year, just got a new alternator instead! Phewwww how many thousands this month la.....:40:

And a bonus point, the mechanic is actually quite an experienced one, a contractor for BMW Penang. When BMW in Penang couldnt solve a problem they send to this guy in SP (some la maybe, not all).

He even printed out the options list for my car when new, from a BMW database which actually could only be accessed by BMW dealers. I'll upload those later.

Wow, the battery can last 8 years.

I'm not alone bro, bro Harbhajan also still have the original BMW battery in his car, and his is made in 2001. Go figure (10 years!)

Haha, no tricks, its maintenance free battery so what can you do anyway?

Dry cell lasting that long is something good to hear -furthermore its bmw brand - should be good quality.

I second your mechanic's advice. i want to change to DIN 100 too.Price should be around 500-600rm . I heard the bmw brand will touch around 800-900rm.

If anyone changed your battery to drycell DIN 100. please advice the exact price pls.tqvm in advance.

I believe it has something to do with it being at the rear, without the extreme heat from engine compartment

Haywire,

Perhaps it will be a good idea to start a new thread " BMW Specialist Workshop for every state". At least when we go for monthly drive or members going outstation and encounter breakdowns, we can seek repairs from the list of workshops.
