Gentlemen, (and ladies), need some assistance with an issue I've got with my E30. M40 318i, 1991 model.Recently while driving, I have begun to hear a noise which sounds like it's coming from the under carriage. Got it checked with a mechanic, the drive shaft mount was replaced and everything was okay. Now, two weeks later, it's back. It does not occur immediately when I start driving. After half an hour or so, there's a weird 'chinking' sound, something like a box of coins being shaken. Have any of you come across something like this? If so, I'd really appreciate your help with this. Many thanks!Jay Jay

ohhh that's lotsa gremlins there ...could be your drive shaft bearing, wheels bearing and many more ...best is to ask your mechanic to sit next to you to determine the sound ..

Appreciate your reply. The wheel bearings have been given the 'green light' by my mechanic. Drive shaft bearing was replaced about 3 weeks ago. It did the trick for a while but the sound is back. Have got to check whether they are other bearings which may have given way.

Raja_Mongkut;853721]"Differential bearing?"

I'm not sure. This morning, the car was jacked up and they ran the gears up to speed, no sound for differential.

I can't really describe the sound, except that it's some sort of 'chinking'. As though something is loose.

Hi gentlemen,

I've managed to get the part fixed already. The person who took care of the problem said it was a loose pipe located at the undercarriage which caused the 'chinking'.

Many thanks to all!
