hi all beemer members and sifus. am considering to get a 328i e36 or e46 so need some advise around here. i dun mind e36 as well coz the design is still appealing how ever considering the age, interest rate is going to be high and my monthly premium is gonna be almost same as taking an e46 say year 2001 with a lower interest rate. example: 1) e36 328i 1997price 50-55K, interest rate 6-7%, repayment 5 years, monthly +- RM 1214 2) e46 3281 2000/2001price 90-100K, interest rate 3-4%, repayment 9 years, monthly +- RM 1156 Therefore which would be a worth buy considering resale value, taking count the years of repayment and value for money. probably you guys can give some comparison and insights on making a choice. Thanx beemerians....Cheers

If your budget is limited... Buy the a E36 1992-94 (318i) that us below RM30K

It will cost you RM26-29K .. A full overhaul for engine and gearbox will add RM4000 so it total to RM 30-32K.. or RM5000 for halfcut 325i engine and gearbox with overhaul and installation

Even if the interest rate is 10% it will only be RM1155 per month (3 years loan)

Expense are RM28K (Purchase price) RM4000 engine&gearbox total RM32K + RM9600 10% interest for 3 years come to a Total RM41,600 .. Say you sold your car after 9 years at RM9,000 ... your expense is RM 32,600 or RM 301 per month.

Worse case senario for mid income earner..

I dont dare to count how much you will lost after paying 9 years for E46 with RM100,000 loan at 4%.. The value of the car by then is about RM20K whereas you have spended.

RM100,000 (purchase price) RM36,000 (4% interest 9 years) total RM136,000 .. RM20K resell value after 9 years.. a total expense of RM116,000 or RM1074 per month to own a car. (exclude initial maintainance after purchase estimate RM4000)

The difference is RM 83,400.. With this amount of cash you may invest into your house, your wedding, your investment, insurance etcs...

Interesting and enlightening comparison geoffreylee! :)

But cost must be weighed against age of car also. A 1992-94 car is already 13-15 years old. If you keep it for another 9 years, it will be 22-24 years old. It depend on whether you really want to drive such aged car. That must be part of the decision, not just cost alone.

I do agree with you, that age have to be considered.

But many forumers who kept their E30 so well, the car still drives well and still admired by many..

Personally, my plans is to keep my ride till I found a E36 CI / convertible then sell my Audi A4..... from there on I will turn the new ride to M3...and keep it as classic.
:D :D :D :D :D

Cheers

thanx for the write up guys...much appreciate..any other insights propels?

No doubt geoffreylee. A good E21, E30 or E36 is worth keeping forever as a classic. But not everyone wants to do that is my point. Maintaining a classic require a lot of care and expenditure, and not everyone want to drive a classic although they admire them. It depend on the individual taste.

Good idea your plan. Except if you want an M3 in the end, I think you should look for an M3 from the start to renovate and keep. Converting will need attention and cost, and may not get the result you looking for. IMHO :p

Thanks Meetoo..

I do agree.. Anyway it is just a dreams for now.

does the e36 328i have single and double vanos variants in their models? how to determine this?

E36 328 is only comes with single vanos. E46 will have double vanos. You may chack at www.realoem.com

does that mean the e36 engine is much more underpowered compared to the e46 double-vanos in terms of torgue or wat so ever? another question is, how much will it cost to transplant a M3 heart into an e36?

On the other forum, Vincent is looking for E36 M3 engine and I heard he was quoted RM28K for the halfcut M3

As for E36 and E46 2.8 engine.. Yes.. E46 328 is much more powerful and advance. Then again glee managed to win many cars on the recent race with his E36 328

E46 is a nicer and sexier car but more headache to own as due to the advance tech it has, more sensors and wear/tear parts to maintain.

E36 is older and less handsome in the eyes of 'ladies' but kinder to our pockets while we can still enjoy the Sheer Driving Pleasure.

You own a sexy Civic SR3 and TX3 is superb for MOD and turbo.. Good luck on your sales.. I believe with the $$$ you got from both ride, you can fund your E46 deposit.

i would say e36 all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!but that because im driving one and its been really good...

looking at speed, hands down the e46 is better then the e36 stock, but then again as days go by, u will want more speed, its an addiction, i have seen e36's (with turbo) out run many italian cars :) .
but the e46 is better looking la...and also with doing up an e46, would be very the fast!!

choice up to u mate.. coz now im also confused..hehe
