Need help from those who do their own bleeding on cooling system. I follow the bentley bmw 5 series service manual on bleeding and it says that i am suppose to remove the bleed vent screw and let the engine idle until overflow is seen. When i follow this, i can have the car idling for 30+mins and still no overflow seen on the bleed/vent hole. Once in awhile, you will see water (but no overflowing) when it dissapears and the bleed hole looks dry (as if there is helluva lot of air). Only when i throttle abit, do i see overflow. The radiator expansion cap is kept close and the level doesn't fall (that is if it falls, it means coolant is replacing purge air/bubbles). Anyone knows the best possible way?I even remove the bleed screw on the thermostant (radiator bleed and expansion tank close) and after about 20mins, it will start to overflow. I screw it shut, and fisnish off with bleeding on the radiator, but it doesn't work like as on the thermostat.Anyone can help?

is it a 12v or a 24v ?

sounds like a 12v engine , since you mentioned a bleed screw on the thermostat housing.12v engines are harder to bleed.

you open the cap when you feel up the radiator, the bleed screw at the radiator and thermostat housing also needs to be open.. when water come out from the thermostat side, close it, and watch the water bleeds from the radiator side. keep putting water in till you see only water comes out like a stream.close up the bleed screw even the cap.
start the car, idle the engine for a while, till you feel the thermostat opens by feeling the top hose to the radiator. then gently open the thermostat bleed screw , make sure little, till u hear a hiss-hiss sound.. that means air is being expelled.
when the hissing is gone, water will gush out, close the bleed screw.
open the radiator bleed screw, repeat the process as the thermostat . then gently open the cap, feel up the water in the reservoir tank.

then idle the car for a while with the hood down, observe the reading is fine. finally take for a test drive.

hopefully this helps.

ok. thanks for the description. I will try again and see. bloody 12 valve engines...hehe.

i used moots method (moots blanja teh tarik :thefinger:) and never fail me.
open the bleed screw @ rad side. fill water.. when almost full, blow with ur mouth, yes blow ... when u blow the water and air will gush out from the bleed screw. make sure u get the screwdriver handy and tighten while the waterflow is consistent.repeat till nomore air cumingout from the bleeding screw.tighten the screw.

next continue filling water... now open the bleedscrew near thermostat. water should cum out. if not u go find a big needle to punch the hole. make sure water flow out from the hole. then u start ur blowing job again.... keep refilling n blowing till no more air cumin out from the hole. tighten the bleed screw.

warm engine and watch the temp... if ur skeptical bout moots method, try open the thermo bleedscrew when the engine is warm, only water will cum out... this method u waste less fuel for warming up the engine

good luck

yea..i heard about the blowing, tried it and it works!. accept i cut a 1.25 bottle water in half, throw the bottom part away, and use the other half, stick it into the expansion cap and blow. I tried initially blowing the top of it and almost fainted. smoke too much!. and i wasnt going to stick my mouth against the expansion tank and have coolant touching my lips. thanks anyways.
