Was advised by a car painter recently that it is best to use baby shampoo to wash the car as it contains no harmless chemical which may harm the wax layer and paint work on our cars. He even discourage the use of car shampoo which leave a layer of wax after wash. Is it workable or practical ? Any comment ??

It is true that baby shampoo is mild, but do bear in mind that it also contains moisturisers which are oil-based. Oil-based products have a bad habit of attracting dirt.

The safest pactice: Buy shampoo from a reputable manufacturer, dilute it more than recomended(so that you get a mild mixture), and clean away.

And i do agree that shampoos that contain waxes should be avoided. A shampoo should clean and do nothing else. Including 'wax' into the equation would trap dirt onto the paint surface. But then, this is just my opinion and I have no facts to back it up.

So Dove cleansers will make me more dirty? :)

Will too diluted car shampoo be not effective in cleaning and thus scratch paintwork with dirt? How do you tell what is the "right" ratio? By looking at the suds or smelling it?

Hahahaha....Dove Cleanser.........Good one!

On the dilution question: read the instructions on said product and cut back by around 20%. No worries in the effectiveness of the cleansing properties and it will still provide enough lubricity.

And the car should end up with baby soft and smooth skin? Woo hoo..... . Might give it a try....

Hmmm.... how about using the dishwashing liquid then? Most are quite gentle and yet it helps to remove grime and oil... may not be soft like a baby's butt tho.... :)

Never, ever! use dishwashing detergent to clean your car as it WILL damage paint. Dishwashing detergents are essentially degreasers, that's why the greasy dishes get squeeky clean in those ads.

It will strip the essential oils off the paint's surface and will immediately remove any wax you have on your car. It will also cause the rubber strips and lining to harden and crack.

Next we will be hearing advice to wax the car with baby lotion so that the car's surface will be as smooth as a baby's behind. :p Some of us can try though. Just dont ask me to try. :)

hehe... gotcha boss!! :p

well, I don't really see myself polishing and waxing it myself, the furthest I could go is washing it myself once a week. So what is the best practical solution for me ?? Any specific brand of car shampoo or car care product that suit my condition ??

Original BMW car wash and wax, car polish and top it up with a good BMW original car wax. :) That's what i normally do. Failing that,(when lazy n no time),send to car care company for some TLC. These companies charge a bomb though.Get a package from them will be cheaper but still quite ex in my opinion.

It seems that I can't run away from polishing & waxing. Sigh !!!
U cant run away from that for sure dude ... no easy way out mate ' :D

Polishing is to remove surface defects and imperfections and to create high gloss on a painted surface.

Waxing is to provide a sacrificial barrier against the elements that we encounter in our harsh environment daily. It's sole function is to protect what has been polished while adding some extra gloss and shine.

Polishing is recommended 2x a year and waxing every two to three months.

One of the mechanic sugessted to use the dish cleaner which it can clean any oil... try it and u will see your car no need for wax..
