Dear CFUs and otais,Recently my brake fluid warning light came on in the dash and long story short the culprit is the clutch master cylinder located somewhere behind the pedals and it has been leaking brake fluid when i park the car and had to top up the DOT4 fluid. Checked the maintenance history file and found out it has never been changed for 15yrs since 1995. So while at it i also change the clutch slave which is located outside beneath the engine on the right side. Now while at it, although it's not due until another 5000km i've decided to change all the beltings too. And i asked the mechanic to check the condition of all my pulleys, hydraulic & mechanical tensioners and the water pump. My mechanic said that tensioners are worn and one bearing had to be replaced immediately, but he also said that my main pulley is also due for change. I checked them myself too when the car was jacked up the ramp.He suggested for me that while i'm at it, why don't i change to the aftermarket pulleys which are lightweight high performance pulleys. I asked what material they're made of and he said aluminium. So my question to the CFUs here, does anyone know what is the pro & cons of using aluminium pulleys? Will it affect my stock engine in the long run? Is there any case of aluminium pulleys got blown in a bmw? Coz personally i would like to use original bmw germany ones coz it last very long like the current one, 15years!Of course logically the car will go faster due to the lightweight reciprocating pulleys but i'm more concerned with long term reliability...Thanks a lot guys and appreciate any inputs!

your car wont be any faster with light weight pullys, your mechanics pockets may be heavier though, id stick to stock

Thanks bro. Actually got my answer last week. And i've decided to use stock pulleys again.

Firdaus325, i'm lucky that the previous owner is a meticulous owner. The car has 178k kms (112k miles) when i bought it and besides all the regular maintenance it had been top-overhauled, all 24 valve changed and also the manual gearbox been overhauled once too....Next month is my 1st anniv. using this car hehe and so far i've been following the periodic maintenance eg for one year i only changed radiator expansion tank, window regulator driver side and fuel pump/float. These 4 items has never been changed when i checked the maintenance record. And recently i've also changed the clutch master cylinder pump and clutch slave (or sleeve?).

Now i'm the process of changing the electric and mechanical tensioners, all the pulleys, waterpump with metallic impellers, relevant hoses, gearbox/axle fluids.....

I'm happy and feeling gratitude owning this beautiful car coz it handles so well and whenever the need arises it would do 200-220km/h anytime (god willing) and the meticulous periodical maintenance in turn gives very rewarding ownership.

I'm also a member with the us site bimmerforums and learn a lot there too and i intend to achieve high mileage ownership like them too eg they have a lot of 150k - 300k mileage good running condition E36....I've seen a friends Mercedec W124 with mileage almost 700k kms mileage and to me it gives a very satisfying feeling seeing good running cars with this mileage.

Orang kita cakap "Memang berbaloi pakai....."

But to avoid similar maintenance of a car, we can always buy a Plug-In EV......which has only 2 gears, reverse and drive! Oh what a dull thing to feel on a road!

just change the engine oil regularly ..etc every 60 days if you're on non syn as if for full syn it's gonna cost you a bomb , but what the heck for a mere rm390 for 2 bottles compared to when it breaks down middle of no where ...

radiator fluid replaced every 6 months once ( upon every 2nd oil change ) RO water with 2 bottels of red line water wetter ...

the rest of the fluid once a year would do ...

that's how i keep my beemer healthy always with no short-cuts of prolonging the engine oil till it reaches 5 K or even 10 K ....

a yearly budget of 2.5K kept aside ( for fluids ) and another 3K ( wear and tear ) would be safe ...IMHO

my 2 cento

Yes mr iceman, you said it right :)

BTW mr iceman, what's your current mileage?

my current mileage now is apprx 120K which since the conversion was done a year back ...the half-cut came in with 96K KM clocked ..that's on my m50

but my previous engine (robust M40) i've clocked above 260K without any overhaul etc etc but all i did was as mentioned above .... the only failures i had was electrical glitches ..etc alternator , starter , aircond blower etc etc ...

i heard that the pulley bearing will wear out faster if we always drive it fast. anyone to confirm this?
