This happened to me on Saturday afternoon. Being a rookie in BMW, I was trying to jump start another car (Kia Spectra) using my E36 318i. Connected the cables to the other car, revved the E36, cranked the Spectra but could not start. Then suddenly, my E36's engine just died off. Tried starting my E36 but it just wouldn't want to start. Then I went to take out the (-) terminal at the car battery. Left it disconnected for about 15 minutes, hoping the ECU would be reset and everything would be ok. Connected everything back and turned the key to start the engine, I heard cranking and then engine managed to start but was shaking badly. Out of a sudden, the engine died off again and I could smell petrol from the exhaust pipe and some black smoke.Thinking I have fried the ECU, I called up the mechanic and told him the situation, he was afraid that the following might have happened:-1) Fried the ECU2) Fried the battery cable (the positive cable - red in color with a fuse inside)Sunday afternoon, the mechanic came over to check with GT1... after almost 1 hour, finally, managed to reset the ECU and EWS. Yes, the short circuit affected the EWS too. Man...this was a whole big lesson to me. Never jump start any other car again :) So, to you guys out there who wanna do this, better think twice and do not take the risk of frying the ECU.

You should have followed the procedure in the manual bro.. Positive (red) to battery and Negative (black) to engine block or the hook that design for it in the engine if your engine is placed at the rear.

Lucky.. lucky you bro

The newer BMWs are more sensitive to this jumpstarting thing... What you commented is what everyone would usually do when jumpstarting... Actually, there is a sequence to strictly adhere to for the electronic-sensitive cars.

I guess E36 is one of the electronic-sensitive cars. My non-BMW mechanic actually did warn or rather advised me not to jump start another car using my E36. In fact, it was my 3rd time jump-started another car. The previous 2 times were okay, guess luck wasn't with me the last time. Just posting this to share with fellow forummers here. Who knows, there might be other noobs like me :)

Now that the ECU has been reset, the idling is a bit rough...I think it will take a few days for the computer to hunt for the settings. The mechanic told me since GT1 was used to reset the ECU/ EWS, my car may be more responsive now...I dunno, yet to try it out coz got myself an old junk (Proton Saga Magma 8v) to be my daily ride to work :p Oh yeah, I got my airbag error code erased as well :)

Cheers~

The proton should serve the purpose of heading down to Klang everyday, bro. U still work there right?

Bro, u got good memory :) u still remember. But nope, no more working in Klang. Back in KL city. Journey to work is much shorter but need to do a lot of marketing visits so the Saga would be a decent ride in town.

By the way, how's your ride with the 325 intake manifold? Wink wink~
