hi all... actually my drift car battery died...(because too long not drive her... been driving my E36 all the while)so i thinking starting that car with my E36...but.. i remember i read here there is some incidence with our friend herewhere he jumpstart other car and his E36 have problem(i cannot find the thread)so i asking here.. is it safe to jumpstart other car with my E36?and also .. is it i follow the user manual than i will be safe?and also what other precaution i need to take....i affraid i fried some cpu or chips....thanks in advance all. :)

i've done it many times... no problemo... but i connect straight from battery at rear not thesingle batt contact point under the hood...

coool.. thanks a lot.
I will connect direct to the battery, and not to the +sign under the hoood.

btw.. should my e46 engine be running during the jump start?
my user manual said can be either way... i not sure

if it's a spanking new battery then without running also will do ...

but my personal opinion , better jump with ya engine running ..at least the battery would be charging via alternator ....worried the other car battery may suck up your entire bat ...

cranking an engine may look as easy as it sounds..

actually it takes alot of batt power to get it started...

best is to keep engine running wt a low rev while jump starting...

Actually, a better way is to charge the other car battery for about 10 minutes or so with your engine running at about 2000 rpm. That way, it will not put so much strain on your battery and alternator when the other car try to crank the engine. This is very true when you have a cheapo jumper lead which is rated to about 200 amps.

I always carried a jumper leads which is rated to 400 amp in my car for emergency usage. I usually start other people car rather than people start my car.

Note: when engine is idle, the alternator voltage is just enough for trickle charging mode.

Use bigger diameter jump cable for effective solution. Low voltage power systems often operate at rather high current levels. If the interconnecting cables are too small,
a large proportion of the power available will be wasted in the cable itself. This loss can be reduced by using a larger cable

Well, I've tried to jump start another car using my E36. But luck was not with me then, I almost fried the ECU. In that case, I was one of those who posted on this topic. Could it be me that you're referring to?

Well, some would say it is safe, some would advise you not to jump start another car. It depends on you, but if I were you... I will just send in the flat battery to workshop for them to recharge (it only cost RM5) after learning hard from the incident :)

Goodluck my friend.

Cheers

yeah.. that is the post
i cannnot find it yesterday....

Hi Bro sam1741, I've did it twice before, seem like nothing happen so far.

hi all~!!

thanks a lot for all the info
i have jumpstart my car

well not really a direct jumpstart
I start my E36 and charge the other battery for 10 minutes
than disconnect the jumpstart cable
than only start the other car...

so now at least the car is alive . :)
and my E36 have no problem..
