I would like to DIY my AFM...can i use brake cleaner to spray in to the AFM and on the temp sensor?

The temperature sensor are quite sensitive. Use a soft and damp cloth to clean it.

If you use intend to use brake cleaner or WD-40 which is a petrol based solvent, it might cleared some dust that is preventing the vane from moving freely.
Most of the forummer have try this before but unfortunately the problem come back again after a few months in service.

If your AFM's vane stuck due to oxidation problem, I doubt any solvent will dissolved it. For a more permanent solution, filling and polishing off the oxidation on the moving part would be a better option.

My advise is to open up the AFM and check the swing movement of the vane.

However, in some cases as discussed in other forums, worn out "resistor track" for the AFM could be also the cause of AFM failure.

Oh..i thought i just wan to clean my AFM for fun. My AFM vane is working fine...just a lil dirty in side. How to u wipe the temp sensor as it is protected by a plastic casing?would cotton butt and spirit work?

As shown in the picture above, you can easily access the temp sensor.
yes, cotton butt and light spirit will do finely.
 
er....lol...not sure if it is the same AFM or not....use in my E23. Maybe i will try first and see.
 
good idea ,i have the same problem when i was driving E36 ................
i thing BMW should improve in this area .

yes they have. It call MAF.
