hi jerance,

ah lim here !!! need ur help ?

1. E36-1993-M40.

2. after i did my AFM service, my my car idling suddenly goes wrong, with 900rpm-1000rpm drops to 500rpm, and idling unstable (500rpm to 700- 1200 rpm), it seems like the air intake unusually ???

3. now i had to force my AFM valve open at certain level inorder to get my car stable idling. how ?

4. I remember before service, initially my AFM valve is not able fully close, is that the problem cause (now i make it fully close) ?

5. pls call my h/p, so that i can consult more.

Hi Jarance,

i found my problem..

1. ICV 'C' hose to intake manifold was leaking.
2. throatle valve has set to open abt 5 degree.

i think after the AFM service, motronic is confuse bcos of the 2 problem, so i chg the 'C' hose, set the throatle valve back to original position, and AFM valve fully close. it seems like rpm is ok, but need to test a few days to see hows the result, or else have buy AFM already...

any suggestion ?
 
Let your ECU learned the new settings. it will compensate for you..

It take a few days for the ecu to adjust..
 
need some assistance from any of u guys....engine had erractic iddling yesterday, and engine died twice... there was evidence of black soot (I guess from black smoke) above the exhaust tip.... dunno wat its costs, and salary not in yet...sigh....any quick solutions or anyone who can assist with Jarance's cleaning technique.... maybe this weekend? Thx....
 
Don't simply adjust your AFM dude,

it will cost more than what you adjust.

send to your mechanic and check properly.

Last my air flow meter so good condition. but my engine stalling.

some people advice me to open it and adjust the spring tension & CO screw. sigh..

more & more worst end up i found out not that problem at all..

if u wanna diy,

u can check those basic component such as spark plug cable resistance.

fuel filter clog or not ?? when is ur last change ??

any air leak on the intake elbow ???

is the ilding valve clean & function???

if you wanna rectify your AFM or Idling vale problem in easier & cheaper way. u can find another e36 buddy and exchange with him.

do not switch ON ignition while doing that.

hope this help.

M50B25 comes with MAF.

Is your engine VANOS or Non-Vanos?
The MAF is different...
VANOS - 4 pin MAF
Non-VANOS - 6 pin MAF

I don't think CO can be adjusted in the M50.. AFAIK, it's ECU-controlled. I could be wrong though.
It all depends what ECU (non-vanos engines) the car is running on. Initial models (CKD with M50 engines) on the E34 has no O2 sensor and hence the CO level can be adjusted via Modic or GT1.
 
after a few days testing, the RPM seems like ok, go smoothly..

but dun know will it cause another problem, like Kinaka said.. :D , then have to spend more $$$... :(

I think your root problem is due to the leak in the ICV valve as this
affect the vaccum of the system. A leak in the vaccum system will
cause the engine to stall and also eractic idling speed.

the hose get harden and broken..

i will get another spare car (proton wira) soon, so that i can diy more...or else not transportion..

jarance, is the O2 sensor built onto the AFM of my M40B18? My mech cant seem to adjust the O2 because the reading on his meter is changing and cant get it stable. He says my O2 sensor kaput, does that mean my AFM also kaput?

Any advise appreciated.
 
There is NO O2 sensor located in the AFM. Air flow is measured by the vane deflection. However, there is a temperature sensor located also in the AFM.

O2 sensor or Oxygen or lamda sensor is usually located on the outlet of the exhaust pipe (just before the cat).

BTW, O2 sensor failure is detected by any Modic. The alarm is usually stored in the ECU and you can retrieved this alarm with any diagnostic tools.

The AFM and O2 sensors are two different items but both of them are connected to the ECU for engine management. i.e. ignition and fuel injection firing. A failure of either one of them will cause your engine to work at NOT the optimum performance.

In the case of AFM failure or fault, you will experience eractic idling speed.
In the case O2 sensor failure, your fuel consumption will increase and also loss of power.

would u by any chance know which pin on the AFM controls which functions pls?..:)

i'm embarking on a diy for MAF conversion.. need some help from u guys..:)

am also looking for installation/schematic diagram for the Obit if anyone's got a copy lying around...:)

thanx a bunch! the link works...my car is a '92 model M40b18...but without the O2 sensor... does it use the same afm? i suspect it does..but i'm sure u would know better eh?..:)...i've worked on a M40b16 which HAS an O2 sensor...and the afm seems similiar..:)
