AFM Service.A lot of people seem to have a lot of problem with their AFM (me including)When the AFM is giving problem, your engine rpm is very eratic at low rpm.Sign of black smoke is evident when the engine is cold. If you have any of this sign, most probably your AFM is sticky.Note: One good way of clearing this problem is give the AFM a thumbto release the sticky vanes or flap. However, the problem will come backafter a few days. Permanent solution is to service the AFM. It can be done but you will needsome basic tool to do it.Here is the way to do for those are DIY.1. Remove the 4 nos. of spring clip to the air filter. 2. Loosen the hose clip with a flat screw driver (or use a 6 size spanner).3. After you losen the hose clip, pull the AFM from the air intake hose.4. Check the vane or flap of the AFM.________________________________________________________

1. you can see the temperature sensor on top. clean it with alcohol or light detergent. Do not use thinner or WD-40 as the temperature sensor could be damged.

2. Use a pen or s long stick to push the flap into the AFM. Note whether there is any restriction when the flap is being push in. My AFM flap was stuck when it was open at 100 %. I try to clean or polish the flap without opening the AFM but the flap still stuck at 100% opening.

3. In the end, I decided to open the AFM.

TO OPEN THE AFM.
1. Remove the screw with a medium size philip screw driver. There are a lot of screw to remove.

2. After you have remove all the screw, remove the silicon glue from the AFM.

To detach the AFM from the Air filter casing, you have to remove the 4 bolt on the inside of the Air filter casing. You have to use a size 10 spanner. If you have a offset spanner, then it would be better as the bottom bolt is situated in arward position to turn the spanner fully.

(Note: I found later that you don't really have to remove this bolt. You can actually release a clip and it slide off).

To remove the bottom cover of the AFM, you need to prise with a long screwdriver from the mouth of the intake. The silicon glue have seal tigh all the gap and it is quite difficult to open it from the outside. it took me quite sometime to figure the technique to open it. Use the screwdrive and a small piece of wood to act as an lever and pivot. Use this lever technique to push the cover away from the casing.

Note: use a soft cloth to protect the AFM internal part when you are attempting to prise open the AFM.

When you have managed to prised open the bottom cover, inspect the part where the flap is touching the AFM casing. My AFM was sticky because the back of the flap was touching the casing.

Here is a picture where the flap was touching.

I cleared the problem with a small flat needle file. After I file the part that is touching, I give the internal part a good clean up with a clean cloth.

Reassembly of the AFM is done in reverse order. i did not use silicon glue because I was not sure that the problem was due the AFM. I use blue liquid gasket (Hylomar) instead to reseal the AFM.

Post Mortem:

The car feel much better after the service. Idling speed is no longer eractic. Pickup is more reponsive. No more funny smell when i start the car in the morning.

Try it for those people who have AFM in their car.

Note. Somebody told me you can solve the problem by converting the MAF.

mr singh ...may need to clean my soon ... can help ahhh ... :p
sure can help.. what help do you need?
whole process take about 2 hours.. ;)

Wow, impressive and detailed explaination.

Wish i knew abt this few yrs back, had to replace my AFM at RM800 (surely kena potong) on my ex-E34.

When idling, the RPM revs itself from 1000rpm to 2000rpm.... whenever in trafficlights, sound like i daring for others to race, luckily no one called my dare!!!

My fuel consumption was fantastic at that time, due to the vroom vroom vroom... So interim solution, i disconnected the AFM by pulling the plug, the engine quiets down, but very no power during takeoff. :(

Finally had to change as my mechanic in Kajang says its spoilt and willingly kena potong leher lo. Wish i had this info then, could have saved and had a very clean AFM.

Good info I try to do it but takut so I just polish as far as i can reach. Would like u to help me the details of that needling thing and how to pry open. About the conversion to MAF where can I get more info.

Attached picture of the needle file. It cost about RM10 from the hardware shop. They are made in China and come in various size and shape. They come in a red pouch or bag..

Regarding the conversion to MAF, our in-house specialist fabian can advise you on it. I think he have done it to his car and also piggy ride a chip.. Hear in the TT that it would cost about RM 2.5 to 3K for labour and part. Take about a day and 20 HP increase... (BTW, this is just hear-say as I have not try it myself) :p

Such a detailed guidelines!!! :D

Traded in the old ones and got this one for RM250.*
Sorryla...cant give u any toy to play with....heheh :D

* 6 months warranty given

Aiyah changed mine for RM600 in Dec after the car stalled twice in 2 weeks...initially I thought it was fuel pump or something then mechanic checked and told me AFM needs to be changed.

I got 1 yr guarantee and my mech replaced the recon AFM in Jan when I complained of erratic idle.

So far OK but I guess nothing like new.....but expensivelah RM1800 for E30 AFM?

Did it yesterday and the result was so amazing. Idling speed no longer erratic in the morning, no more funny or irritant emission and the car reponsive become better.

Thanks Jarance. :yahoo:

what is WD-40??? is it a type of lubricant????
It the mechanic dream thing to have... :yes!:

Yes, it a can of pressurise lubricant. The can is yellow and white in colour. You can get it in any hardware shop. WD-40 can be used as a penetrant oil. When you have a bolt that is hard to remove, you can spray wd-40 on it and leave it for a minute. it will help to loosen the bolt. It also can be used for moisture repelant. I used it to spray on HT cable in cold weather to help me start the car..

yes it a wonder liquid.. equivalent is crc-90 or something like that.. :yes!:
