Advice on choosing E46

Hi Guys. I appreciate your time reading this posting. I wish to own my 1st BMW and I think I want to own an e46 model. I am doing a lot of research now and I am learning.

What I wish to know, which cc engine should I buy. I am considering 1.8 and 2.5. my driving style is mix city and highway. Fix cost like roadtax and insurance is not really a problem as I can save up each month to pay it yearly.

Which one give less problem and easier to maintain.

The best all rounder is the 325i with the M54 engine. sweet inline 6 with a bulletproof engine. if possible, get it off an enthusiast with all the service records intact. prices should be well below 35k for makes from 2004-2005. Lots of info in the e46 threads.
