Dear All,
I just bought my first BMW, a 2004 525i Japan import. The car is in a good condition, a real pleasure to drive and look at :).

So here is the question, as per my understanding BMW periodically releases software updates for its car to improve functionality. I am not sure which version my car is currently on, but if I am correct the original Japanese software version could not tune into all the local radio stations. I can tune into all of them so this means the previous owner updated the software but so far I don't have any other information about the version. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am planning to update the software, I have contacted BM world works for the update, they have advised me to bring the car to their garage so they can have a look at it and only than they can inform me of affects and charges that might incur.

Another reason I want the software update is the milage, of course its a 2.5 lit engine but the onboard computer is showing me a milage of 6 to 7 km/l which is quite bad, average should be around 9. I have taken the car for its service after purchasing it and changed the engine oil, spark plugs (with BOSCH) rear break pads and front bushes. They rewetted the car but the milage remains pretty much the same.

So the question is will the software update help me get a better milage with an overall increase in functional capability or I am chasing wind. Furthermore is there only OFFICIAL BMW softwares available in the market or there are other OEM coding available.

I would really appreciate if you can advise me from your experience, please correct me for any wrong information I am having. If you know any other reliable person/workshop other than the one I mentioned kindly advise also about the reputation of the BM World.

Thanks.
