Hi guys,I am thinking of getting a digital camera but like always, I am always unsure and indecisive of which brand and model to get. Recently, been seeing a lot of promotions whereby they are offering decent packages for the price of below RM500 (in the region of RM4xx). Most noticeable brand and model for this price category would be:-a) Olympus FE270b) Canon A460Any comments and feedbacks on the above 2 brand and model (need advice from amateur photographers). My criteria for a digital camera is pretty simple... with decent picture quality, user friendly with modern functions, not too bulky, reliable one (problem free), etc.Not a digital camera freak myself so I am not sure what other brand and model available in the market for such price category. Would be delighted if some of you guys out there can share. Thanks a lot :)

Go for the Olympus bro.. If not then look for any that have high ISO performance, prefer ISO800 and above it will help you during evening shots..

Thanks for the tips bro. U mean given a choice of Canon A460 and Olympus FE270, u would suggest that 1 should buy the Olympus FE270?

Not much choice there you gave me there ya..

How much is the 280? It is sexier and slimmer then the 270.

If budget permit....My choice is Oym 790 superb as u can take pictures in the rain, while swimming, trekking, party, camping, car chase, etcs also it look sexy..

Bro,

I am not sure how much the 280 cost. Need some eyes and ears in the market on my behalf...any input?
Sexiest cam? :p dont need a sexy cam, a functional one would do... below RM500 (my budget)

it all depends on what you are looking for.
I am a Canon/Nikon user and find that these
two provide the finest results for the money
invested..... analog-vise.
when i switched to digital I was running a
Canon series therefore I had a couple of
lenses and flashes to carry forward so I
graduated to a Canon digitalSLR. I had to do
away with the flash as it could not synch with the
digicam. Luckily the lenses could work with the
digital slr. My bet is that you go for a canon or
a nikon compact Digicam, go for the highest
mb capture as it determinesthe sharpness
and the size quality of the image.
if you are uncertain then PM me and I will
take you thru the steps of digital pixation.
hope u make the sensible choice, mate.

Canon Vs Olympus Vs Nikon Vs Panasonic (Lumix) Vs Sony...

Gee, so many choices to choose but really have no idea which is good.

Lost & confused,

Why not get a very very good film camera since you are not a digital freak. To me, none of the small compact digital gives decent picture quality. The manufacturers try to cram as many megapixels as possible in a small sensor. Because of this digital SLR gives decent picture quality. Film camera gives the best picture quality. You can get the best deal out of film camera nowadays since nobody wants to buy it.

My 2 cents.

My first choices are : Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm.
Others : Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Leica
I will never get HP, Kodak.

Few things for me to consider when buying a compact camera:
1. AA batteries, just in-case battery run out.
2. ISO1600 and above. Good for in-room / low light.
3. SD card. Most available and compatible (So, Olympus, Fujifilm, Sony is out)
4. Video-recording, with ZOOM when recording.
5. 3X OPTICAL zoom. More prefer.
6. Anti-Shake feature.

Don't get fool by MegaPixel craze. Is not always "the more the better"
Anything above 5.0mp is good enough for 4R picture.
A good 6.0mp camera can outperform a crappy 10.0mp camera in terms of pixel quality.

Try Nikon L16, and Canon A550.
Nikon L16 is less than RM400. Bought one.
Great point-and-shoot camera. Even my mom can take great pictures :D

Film camera ?

I vote for Sony (my office had two sets; one with those floppy drive ... 8 years ago-lah .. very convenient. Picture quality is very good.)

then Olympus

Last Cannon

Nikon .... I donno ... use to have the S8008 SLR (?)... it was really2 good
until I forgot to remove those brand new duracell batteries inside.
... and did use the camera ... maybe for 6 months....

Digital camera is good ... cause you can immediately see the result and keep them in your computer... and do editing, sharing ..etc.

So far the best quality I've seen is from Canon and Sony. I personally dislike anything Sony (except for their Playstations which I'm an avid supporter) due to their memory card type. Also try to find something that doesn't have the charger built-in together with the camera. It's costly to fix in the event the charger malfunctions and whatnot.

Turbology basically summed up what you should look for in a digital camera, although I don't agree with point no.1 he he.

My very first digital camera was a Casio Z4 which had a decent image quality but was horrible when you used flash. Somehow the flash and shutter doesn't seem to want to work together :p. I think over the years Casio has improved themselves greatly and the picture quality from the newer models are great and comparable to brands like Canon and Sony.

Film is still a great format to shoot on imo. Only problem is that you can't preview your shots like what you can do with digital cameras. A square format Hasselblad is wonderful if you can afford one. Only a small handful of people I know now still shoot on film.

P.S (I stay away from anything that uses AA batteries :p)

Thanks for all the input. Probably I will go for a Nikon, or a Canon since the prices these days have gone down tremendously. Well, a film camera (the conventional way)? Don't think that's in my list since digital camera is more handy and convenient.

Those with AA batteries are quite bulky, so I believe the ultra slim type is more of a choice to be made ;)

Thanks, will keep you guys updated soon. Will do some shopping soon, since Courts Mammoth is having some grand sale carnival (you guys should check out the crowd they have today). LOL

Russie,

I hope you understand what to expect to get when you budget RM500 for digital cameras. I dont know your knowledge of digital photography, so i wont use too much jargon here (if possible).

For simple point and shoot (P&S) function, the cams you listed above are good enuff. Contrary to what others have said, Kodaks have very good color reproduction and takes great pictures. I do like Kodaks for P&S compacts for these reasons.

For printing pics up to 4R, any digicam above 5MP will be good, so again its up to the personal preferences of design (handling) and how the pics will come out. Again, if you budget RM500, dont expect stellar pics.

Forget abt great pics at any ISO higher than 100, haha.... compact digicams have such small sensors that they cant capture good low light scenes. Getting more MPs actually will add more "noise" to the pics, but then again, this may be too technical for you. Just remember, RM500 will get you simple cam that takes good pictures in GOOD lighting condition (ie. bright daylight at ISO100). Learn to work the flash and around the limitations of the camera at low light conditions.

For me, at yr budget, I will take Kodaks (due to the great color reproduction), then the Canon and lastly the Oly. My opinion strictly.

All similarly priced digicams will have similar functions (as scenes, zooms, etc) AND they will produce very similar results.... so the main thing is for you to stroll to a store that have all the models at your price range, then try it out. Get the one that you are most comfortable with in yr hands, coz thats the first step to taking great pictures.

My dua kupangs.

Was in one today.... the crowds was unbelievable and the speed of goods going out the check out counters was as unbelievable too....

The prices are decent, but note that they are mainly clearing old stocks to make way for new ones....

5201,

Thanks for your lengthy comment :) appreciate it. Yeah, I know what I am expecting for the little tight budget. I am not expecting something grand...just a simple digital cam for normal picture taking would be just fine.

Thanks
