Am new to BMW cars and new this club. I have only been driving my brand new 3 series for less than 2 months and my front windscreen has already suffered TWO chips from two separate driving occasion! I am glad i did insure the windscreen separately but my questions is, am i really that lucky or is the BMW's windscreen more fragile somehow? I have been driving two different Japanese cars for the past 10 years and have never been inflicted the same. Funny thing is i never bought windscreen insurance before in my life. On this 3 series is my first and it seems to be attracting trouble!Puzzled!

The insulation, production process, basically, the screen itself is of much better quality than that of most Japanese cars. You only to touch it from the inside on a hot day. The difference in heat resistance between the two is most telling.....

Your case is just unfortunately, a bit of bad luck. Are they chips or stars? Can you show pictures. Insured or not, replacing a whole windscreen is a tedious process......and if not properly done, a dangerous affair too. They are places that can fix minor damage.

atty, I feel for you that owning this car has been sheer pain rather than joy. But I think it's just coincidental that you kena 2 windscreen hits. My personal experience of a direct hit by a large (and I mean large) chunk of concrete off a crane is that the BMW windscreen is very tough.

But get your rattling issues fixed, or sell the car. It's no good feeling embarrassed when you have a passenger, when you should be feeling the exact opposite. I don't see why you or any others want to write to BMWM. Why not just pick up the phone and speak to a director? Again my personal experience is that they're customer-oriented and want to solve your problem(s). I didn't have to get nasty in the least (and I can be very nasty) I'm still in handphone contact with the director who sorted my problem.

atty, Schwepps is right. Call BMWM and be professional about it. I'm sure a voice call will get more attention than a letter. (cos replies can always be crafted and recrafted and written to "perfection". But they can't do this on a voice call (else they will be going "eee, ahh, errr....... ")

Right? :top:

There won't be any hesitation on their part. In my case, he was most interested to hear my complaint, and the name of the SA who didn't give me satisfaction. He then called a few dealer branches to see which one had the missing part in stock. Then called me back and gave me the branch GM's and his own HP nos. The branch GM handled the retrofit personally on the workshop floor. You should have seen how efficient the mechanics were while the both of us stood there and watched them work. :)

mine also kena chipped

my fren's VW golf MK6, worst, cracked in less than 2 moons of driving

Sell the car, Schwepps?
That is so sad... i have waited to own a BMW.

I think i might have solved the rattling door noise issue. Now i am just waiting for my car to clock 10,000km for me to bring in for the first service. Will change the windscreen same time since it is fully insured. Hopefully after that things will be back to how JOY should be.

Thanks for the suggestion to call BMWM, Schwepps & MSports. I will give them a break until after CNY. Will be monitoring the rattling noise. If it gets out of hand again, i will definitely pick up the phone.

Atty, my experience is the same as your ride. Just 3 days owning it, my windscreen cracked after been hit by a stone and it has a one cm deep cracked called Bulls-eye by the windscreen repairer. Owning a BMW is aint no joy!

In my experience the windscreen is a tough one. Mine got hit with a big chunk of flying concrete (slightly bigger than a tennis ball!), during a heavy thunderstorm just before I entered the SMART tunnel (not sure if it was thrown or if the wind took it, but due to the lightning and rain, I doubt anyone would want to be out in the elements anyway). It hit the windscreen with one loud bang and bounced off. I had a small chip slightly smaller than a sunflower seed, which I subsequently had repaired, leaving a slightly visible mark.

Hahaha! I mean that if you can't solve the problem, you should off-load this unit and get another one, or another make altogether. I once bought a car which was such a lemon that the dealer offered to trade me a new one, at favourable terms so that I wouldn't lose financially.

Contrary to rumours started by my friend AB, my unit is still under warranty and it's been absolutely perfect, so I wouldn't exchange it for anything...until 2014 when it'll be time to get the new 3.

The BMWM guy I know is the Sales director, as mine was a delivery-related problem. He'd be the wrong guy to help you. You should talk to either the After Sales director or the Technical director. You may need to be assertive to get past the BMW Voice CSA to speak to them. It's possible, because I did.

Anyway, good luck with your rubber treatment fix. I hope it works!

haha... Schwepps' fault!
Asking me to sell my 2 mth old car.
But i am starting to enjoy the ride cause the rattling noise is gone.

Saw the new 5 on the internet... nice!

Is the new 3 coming to Malaysia 2014 or 2012?

The F10 will be launched here in mid-2010, and the F30 in mid-2012. But don't expect me to buy any new model in the first 1.5 years of launch and be one of the guinea pigs for them to sort out the bugs. Early 2014 is when I'll start to look at it seriously.

Having said that, I don't think the F30 will be much different from the E90, except for smaller but turbocharged engines. Same chassis after all. However, I'm looking forward to Van Hooydonk's 'shark' look, as a departure from Bangle's 'eagle-eyes' look.
