..usually, when we all go to car dealers, there are various vehicles, at various states, age and so on..so, many times I heard that 'this or that vehicle is recon'..so, I was thinking, 'recon' is shortcut from 'reconditioned' , and i thought its something like , some kind of, overhauled car or something like that, like, brought up to its original state when it was new, much as it was possible..so, today, i was told in one discussion that 'recon' vehicle is not what I thought it is..so when I asked, what it is then, I was told that its basically just import from overseas, or something like that..but then, if that is true, why is it named 'recon' vehicle?? I mean, whats the different from same car type, imported trough official dealer then (2nd hand)??

Some dealers do some 'recondition' of the cars, but these are mostly cosmetics. They repaint and touch up the cars and then market it as 'recon'. Nothing much changed mechanically.

I know of a car painting workshop who specialises in these 'recon' cars, and not just BMWs, they had Porches and other makes too there.

The word recon started back in the 80's when we used to import a lot of used cars from Japan. Regulations at that time were that cars had to br reconditioned before export from Japan. Over time the word recon has been used on all used cars that were imported.
