starting this thread to give everyone a heads-up and share some experiences.here's mine- car (e46) sudden cutoff and died in the middle of road. called my mech and he said maybe fuel pump and need to be towed. restart and was rolling again but hesitantly. after a few start/stops made it back home 1km away. Towed it next day on a flatbed(thank god) and diagnosis was a faulty crank sensor (RM310). had to leave it overnight as the mechs had to remove the manifold to get to this sensor.damage was RM530 incl towing(120)the thing is , there was no warning and quite abrupt.. I was in the middle of a conversation with GF and suddenly kaput...then only the DSC light and warning lights came on!..My ex-10 year old saga also never breakdown before...sigh:(

twice happened to me:

1. E30 M40B18; coming back from office, i stop to buy some food. After about 20 min. got back into the car and crank it till the battery kaput, car refuse to start. Tow it to the workshop and end up with a dying fuel pump. The pocket damage, new fuel pump, labour and tow. No symptom, no cough no nothing.

2. E36 M43B18. Happened last December. Coming back from JB; once reach Jalan Parliment after approximately 3 and half hour traveling, in the middle of downpour and traffic quite heavy and i stuck in the jam, while idling, suddenly the engine died. Tow it to the workshop. Plug the computer and it was the crank sensor. It cost me RM80 (towing), RM250 for the crank sensor and RM50 for the labour. This also same as above, no symptom, no nothing. I ask the mechanic and he told me that, once the crank sensor kaput, the electrical supply to the fuel pump and ignition coil will be cut off.

brakdown:-

1. faulty crankshaft sensor.. use to have the car stalled while driving but manage to restart but finally stalled while on the highway.

2. loss of coolant - engine overheating. can restart after cooling down and topped up water.

3. loss of coolant - solenoid valve for hot water to AHU broken - engine overheat. manage to get system running by doing a quick bypass.

4. fuel pump kaput - loss of power and car stalled. knock pump and can it going in limping mode. change pump with another brand as could not get spare part.

5. engine overheating - water pump seal damaged causing loss of coolant. Emergency replacement with plastic type (on highway) but change it back to original when got back to my workshop.

All the aboves happened during the span of 13 years of owing the car.

My history breakdown...

1. Too much revv going up genting... overheat at the top. must wait for 30 minutes for the engine to cool down and topup water.

2. ECU kong. Most probably because it's too near the aircond blower fan, so kena air. Car don't want to start. Fix the ECU for rm150.

3. Engine pulley tercabut. The outer ring & the core were attached by some rubber (bush?)... Got it replaced by copper bushing... (that's what the mechanic told me, I didn't manage to take a look at it).

4. Plastic stuck at engine fan. Dunno how it managed to get there... was on the way up Cameron Highlands. Engine overheat and stalled. When engine cold, took out that plastic from strangling my fan and then ok no more problem.
