Hi guys, my dad has a 96 528i in JB. He called me this morning saying the radiator burst and water has gone into the engine. Anyone knows if the water from the radiator can really enter the engine? I'm worried the mechanic is trying to pull a fast one on him.

It is possible when you have an engine overheating.

Do a compression test as well as the gasket might be blown as well.

BTW, did anybody fill the radiator with water when the engine is still HOT?

it might leak into the engine if the cylinder head is crack. To know if this is so; was there any frequent loss of coolant from your dad's radiator before this?where you need to top it up regularly.

If no, then I don't think so that water has gone into the engine. As for now, you can do a simple check by checking your engine oil. If it looks milky, than the normal black colour, then yes, water has sipped into your dad's bmw engine.

yes forgot to mention.. that could happen too

few things you need to check before you remove the head. Coolant loss? Can you see milky color or oil on top of the coolant tank? can check the coolant pressure whether can sustain at 1.5 bar. drain out the engine oil and check the oil colour, check all the spark plugs too.

It will tells you everything.

Hi Jarance,

Compression test will just tells you there is a wear on the piston rings and valve seats. Hardly to show there is leaks between the water jacket and the combustion chamber.

If the water really get into the combustion chamber, the mechanic will tells u is hydraulic lock!

Be careful.. Hydrolock is very dengerous. If that happens, your engine is done mate.

do u keep driving when ur radiator leak or ur radiator cap rosak?

If the radiator is leaking but we keep top up the water everyday, the car still save to drive, right?

if u keeping fill up the water next thing going leak was your engine block.especially don fill the water when your engine are hot,it will make your engine block break more faster:eek:

In a nutshell, no.

Its just increasing the odds of things going wrong after that.

That depends BMW has a self bleeding system.

Hi guys, the engine block has 2 hairline crack. Not really sure what caused it at this point. Could it be a first batch E39 defect? If i'm not wrong this car was the first 10 units brought in by AB. Mileage only 110k. :(

where is the hairline crack? 4 and 5 cylinder?

It is between the cylinder and the water jacket?
