This morning after I have started the car and was reversing turning right, the steering wheel jam & I immediately apply the brake. I started the engine again and it happen again. It does not happen when I turn the steering to the left. The 3rd time I turn the steering right & left before reversing the car.I manage to drive to office without any hiccup.Anyone experience this problem before & care to share the information ?

Correct me if I am wrong you should be driving a 328?
if yes it sounds like the spinning ignition barrel issue. there is a pin in the keylock system which does the steering lock which tends to malfunction.
Google on this for more DIY or repair advice. cheers

Sounds like steering lock has gone kaput. Happened to me once before.

Happened to me exactly the same way while I was getting out of parking to go to office.
Had the lock taken out as it can be dangerous if the steering wheel lock while driving on the road.

I suggest its best to get it fixed before you drive your car.

This is a norm for E36 and also E39...
So be very carefull if its happened at ur door step better give it a taxi ride on a tow truck...

My E36 318 steering wheel jam yesterday morning after i i have started the engine and about to leave for work.Call tow truck for rescue.Tow to workshop & mechanic change the lock housing (chop shop) RM350 & labor RM100.He said that I was daring to drive with the problem mechanism a day before..It can jam any moment & will cause serious accident with the steering wheel lock.
IMO i suggest that those with E36 to take the slightest symptom on the steering wheel seriously. In my case the first symptom was a light ticking noise when i turn the steering wheel. As my car is already 17 years old, i did not pay any attention to it.Never in my mind that once the engine is started, the lock pin should be release for the steering to turn. Then came the turning of steering wheel lock for a while & back to normal whenever I start the car.
So get it repair when the symptom show up.

to be safe its best to take out the lock... u have replaced with a second hand one dont know when that one will fail

i have taken out my car's lock..

I have deleted it out for my E39 after it got stuck on nice Friday morning after my nice teh tarik. My E36, still no issue yet... but I don't drive it daily though, as its my touge car on the weekends. Hope it stays that way. As opening up the column is hell of a job looking at it on how my mech opens it

Couple of people have had problems with the lock mechanism. Failures have been reported. So do the stuff .. make sure gear is firmly in Park. Jiggle the keys while tugging on the steering wheel to release the tension on the catch. Make sure the temperature of RX is above freezing or use the heat-lubricant-for-frozen-locks.If all fails, I would suggest call the Locksmith to discuss options of calling a dealer or having your RX flat-bed to the right place.
