Hi GuysI using a E36 328 , Just recently im having power steering problem where its getting heavier to turn left or right , sometimes stuck. What could the problem ? I have a plan to change complete 4 side absorber and the original 2nd steering handle .. Can pls recommend where can i buy the part's and change it .

rapuspa, i'm having same issue with the power steering except that it never gets stuck ...sometimes it is smooth, sometimes it has rough feedback when turning especially to the left and some humming sound from engine compartment...when i told my mechanic to check, it is working just fine...but when i'm almost home i detect the sound again:eek:

wondering what is the problem....

e36 sifu mind to shed some light?

Check your steering rack. Could be one of the oil seals busted hence the heaviness when you're turning.

Humming sound whenever you turn is usually an early indication that your power steering pump is slowly failing. You could probably still use it for a while before it kaputs.

First check the oil level..

1. Sign of Low oil level for power steering - When you turn to the left or right, there is a humming sound. The sound is caused by air pocket from the power steering pump.

2. Check for any oil leakage of the power steering. You might have to squeeze the rubber bellow on the left and right.
note ; a clear indication is the oil level is low for the power steering.

3. Check the belt tension for the power steering pump. Sometime loose belt or worn out or broken belf will cause the problem.

I have oil leak at the power steering before. Took me about 5 years before I have decide to change it.

Got spare parts for power steering and pump for about RM700 at potong shop. Labour cost RM100.. Now no oil stain on the floor.. (and complaint from wifey)

Check your asorber top mount.. the bearing could have colapsed, or bearing jam..

Thanks for feedback ... i did saw oil leaking as well when i ask the mechanic to lift the car up to change the engine oil , i could see the leaking . Can pls advise at which potong shop i can get the parts.. guess its time for me to change the pump and streering rack i guess

Can recommend any potong shop where i can get those stuff ... anywhere nearby PJ , subang or sunway ..

suggest to get recon steering rack. more reliable than half cut shop parts. don't have the contact but apparently one guys in kepong does recons. you will need to trade in your current rack as part of the deal. recon for my e36 318 cost me rm 800

No need to change the pump if there is no leak.

As mentioned by Hellraiser, it is better to get a recon.

As for me, I got it from a potong shop. I check the steering rack for any sign of leak. Quite surprisingly, the power steering was clean (almost new-no dirt or oil stain). Cost me RM550 for the rack. Been using for a month and no problem. (just lucky).

I got mine from Klang.. From Klang town, head toward Jalan Meru toward Meru Town for about 3 KM and just passing the toll (highway to go back to Kapar/KL). The shop shop be on the right sdie. Make a U turn at the traffic Light..

There is a lot of shops selling -used ones, mostly at the chop shops, dun buy a reconditioned one, cos they might fail..

cheers..

bro, I thought buying a recon is better cos most of the worn out or damaged parts will be replaced.

chop shop are usually "as it is" condition so you don't know what is the condition or usage. it is a matter of luck. But usually chopshop give some warranty like 2 weeks from date of purchase..

just to share also, if the recon steering rack is not to customer satisfaction, it is also possible to get another replacement.

I usually to go PJ near the railways ..BIMER auto shop , owner is Selvam
Do u have any recommendation , kindly let me know

most of the recon rack not done proffessionally,u need an experience guy to changed the seals,if not done properly, even with new seals, most can last 1 to 3 mths, then start to leak again. Some will just chemical clean it n pray u dont come back for a replacement.if from potong kererta,as long as no leak and not tampered with u r ok

just to share bro, my recon steering rack has lasted me 1 year plus. so far no problems (touch wood!)
