Hi to all sifus & forumers,I'm thinking of rebuilding my engine instead of upgrading. Need to know if someone here know where i can get spare parts for the rebuilding. The spec are as follows:Model: E36Engine: M40B18,The parts that i'm looking for are as follows:1. Pistons sets (4 pcs): from STD 83,985MM need to change to Oversize + 0,252. Piston rings sets for the # 1. above3. Estimate price for #1 & 2From realoem.com the piston diameter are the same for M40, M43 & M42 but i'm not sure about the piston height, is it interchangeable, need sifus confirmation on this. The rest of the part other then the parts mention above are available at my place here in Sungai Petani. The other problem is, anyone know where i can send for reboring in SP / PenangThanks in Advance

the journey will end up spending more OR less the same as getting an m50 or m52 ...and end up yet spending and spending and spending till you're over with it ...

can't really go far with an m40 ...my personal view only ...as i've been with those m40's for the past 7 great years ....

u can call up Bavarian Auto or any of the BMW Parts stockist to enquire the parts prices... U can even ask for overhaul kit set for the M40. however, not sure if they sell the piston rings for your intended overbore...

and why do u need to bore the cylinders?? It is scored?

U can google for bavarian auto's contact number...
u can also get price quote from Inner Power.. what's the nummber? google loh...

Thanks ICEMAN 13, i've seen your thread(journey), as for me since i'm from technical background myself, most of the repair i DIY, so the cost is not so obvious.

I'm quit satisfied with my wife's m40 bought in KL early last year which already had major overhaull before i bought it.

I decide to rebuilt mine since the oil consumption is getting worse. Not going for power i guess 1.8 is good enough for me.

Hi fab, i do expect u to answer since u are using e30 with m42.
You need to rebore if u want to use an oversize piston.
Ok will google for Inner Power

Thanks guys for the reply

rebuild price might higher than buy a used m40 engine, someone is selling rm1k for this engine.

If u really want to bore it out, might as well bore to 86mm... then the displacement is increased from 1796cc to 1883cc...

Which is why I asked, what's the reason for you to rebore the cylinder wall.. Whether the wall is scored.. if the wall is still ok. no point boring it..

Thanks for your sugestion Fab, but i still will follow manufacturers recomendation which is 1st + 0,25 & 2nd + 0,50 depending on the cylinder worn out.

Rebore should be done in order fix a new size piston(in this case oversize by + 0,25), not only if it is scored. The cylinder wall worn out normally is not even from top mid & bottom, from reciprocating area(whih is left/right and front/rear of the cylinder wall) hence the need to rebore.

I already have one spare complete m40 engine including alternator, a/c comp, auto gearbox & etc for half the price mention above hehehe, just need to keep my car everything to the original cond.

Another option is M42. :)

Yes elwine30 another option.

I was thinking to change to m42 since haynes & bentley manual for e36 only shows only m42 but after i bought another e36 m40 with Mosselman turbo setup, i'd really satisfied with m40. Furthermore if one car got part problem easly can swap in order to use / to confirm part problem hehehe.
