BMW recalls 220,000 2002-2003 3 Series cars over an airbag problem BMW has issued a recall of 220,000 vehicles because of a defect in Japanese-made airbags installed over a 10 years ago. The erroneous airbags made by Takata Corp had several weeks ago had also sparked the recall of more than three million cars made by Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda. For BMW, the affected cars were 3 Series models, including sedans, coupes and other types, produced between December 2001 and March 2003. “We have been informed by the supplier that there could be a problem with this airbag,” spokesman Bernhard Santer told AFP. BMW assured customers that this is just a preventive measure. “We have never had a problem … It is a precaution to ensure the safety of our clients,” said Santer. The spokesman said fixing the problem would take about one hour in a workshop and would be free of charge. Source: Vanguard

Is it me or is it a FACT that cars in Malaysia (all make, not just BMWs) seems to either never ever gets recalled or if it does under rare occasion, we are one of the last to get the recall fix. We must be a very forgiving society, so much so our consumer rights are conveniently ignored.

VW Malaysia did announce a recall of VWs for a fault in their DSG gearbox recently, affecting about 3k+ cars. And I think Proton did a recall few years ago as well.

What should I do since mine is affected by this recall exercise? Please advice...

I think the japan spec car only affected. that is why BMW Malaysia has no concern on this issue

Can I just give you my 2 cents regarding vehicle recall policy in Msia. I have personally have dealt with this issue with 2 different franchise holders in Msia regarding vehicle recalls which affected 2 different makes the N65 & E92 to be precise.

Let me put it to you bluntly! :listen: The service advisors were less than transparent on the issue! I had to contact my BMW tech friend in the UK to get a hold of the technical documents/schematics from Germany regarding the recall matter and even then the service advisor as evasive on the whole matter. :stupid:

In truth the after-sales department in most BMW dealership sucks because of the lackadaisical attitude! :13: The service advisors are incapable of dealing with those who actually know their vehicle ie more than your basic user/driver of the German marque.

I might be not from a motoring background (Surgeon actually :nurse:) but I do take note of technical aspects of vehicle function and maintenance. Every dealership after-sales service advisor has insisted on treating me like an idiot with a "fat" wallet. :boxing: This is something I find extremely unacceptable and disappointing. :thefinger:

In short my matter is now under BMW Msia for resolution. For those of you have been dealing with incompetent service advisors please address the matter to BMW Msia in writing as it helps to build your case when things are in writing :damnmate:. Especially if the failure to identify a recall results in some form of critical damage to your vehicle. The address and email is available of the BMW Talk section. :top:

These days whenever I service my vehicle or send for repairs, I insist on the service advisor print off the vehicle diagnostics report from the dealership. There are manuals that can help you decipher the error codes on the sheet to verify the service advisor isn't bullshitting you!

For those of you who need to check whether your vehicle make and year are subject to any manufacturer recall, there are websites you can go to to verify independently. If you need further info please PM me. If there is enough interest I will put it up in the forum. I had already posted info on where you can decode your beemer vin under the BMW Talk Section. :top:

Happy motoring folks! :driver:

To actually work the programs you don’t have to do much, it’s very very simple. They contain guides with screenshots which take you through the unlock process step by step – so it’s totally safe if you’re not great with technology (and easy if you are).

The dreaded Takata airbag rears its ugly head again.

So anyone worried? Or since Malaysia has lax recall policies, there is no point to worry?
