Typical with the standard radio is that the volume knob tends to become loose which result in the inability to on/off. This is due to the plastic holding bracket has broken off. I guess after 10 years of repeated on/off it tends to disintegrate. Refer to red circle below. To fix just get your standard bamboo chopstick, measure the length between the knob and the holding area and cut it. I used 2 sticks for this purpose. Refer to the yellow squares. How long this fix wil last? No idea but its virtually FOC and approximately 1hr of labour time :)....

update. the longer stick is to hold the bracket, while the shorter one is to offer additional hold on the button, which is the green square thingy that it is pressing upon. Without the 2nd stick leverage, the button won't click.

Why BMW or alpine didn't design a better knob, beats me... :(

For my case, its not the inability for the on/off function. Instead, it's the inability to adjust the volume once its on (no change in volume by turining left-right). Luckily I still have the volume control on my steering wheel. Sent to few accessory shops and ask for repairing but they only want me to change the entire unit... not interested in repairing of any sort. Guessed no profit margin for them to repair. Any suggestion?

oh then in your case, could be the knob itself has gone bonkers...unless you can go to any breaker yard and get them to sell you a spoiled unit so you can just use the volume knob. Quite simple to replace..just 1 screw and 1 wire :)
