Need some comments from all those sifus out there. This is with regards to my E34 520i M50B20....In the past, the fan clutch is stuck and the fan is always turning. The water temp then is usually 1/4 when on the move or 1/2 in traffic jams. After changing the fan clutch (new one), the water temp is then 1/2 (which is normal). However, now I notice when in traffic jams, the temp will rise to 3/4 or higher.Ok, electrical fan is working and high speed kicks in but temp still keeps going up.Yesterday, with cold engine, when I opened the expansion tank cap, water splurted out from the tank. Water level was supposed to be at the FULL level. Where did the water come from?I have checked my water pump last month. It is ok and is the metal type.Thermostat not changed before. What could be the reason for the rise in the water temp? Thermostat? Or do I need to adjust my fan clutch?

Bro listen .... i had the same prob with my E36 n its solved by Antera ... u give a try there ....

and do proper 'bleeding' ..

Just REPLACE thermostats and flush coolant. Then new 50:50 coolant-to-distilled. That should fix it once and for all!.

The temp level should be 1/2 (or 12 oclock position) ALL the time. On some very HOT days and stuck in jams, needle may veer to 12:30 or almost 1 oclock position. But NEVER to 3/4 mark. Problem is, when it reaches the 3/4 mark, it will hit RED market within minutes.
If it over heats, you cannot do a thing. DO NOT open radiator cap like in Jap cars. You will get burnt from pressured coolant. Wait 1 hour or more for engine to cool down. Do not pour cold/cool water on the radiator or engine.

One way to bring the needle back from 3/4 to 1/2 or 1 o"clock position is to off the A/C. wind down windows and SWITCH one HEATER Full!. I know it would be HOT in the cabin. But this is way better than getting Overheating and not moving at all. Just light a cigarette so it is not that obvious that the cars is almost overheating.

PS: I did that for almost an hour one night about 3 years ago coming back from long trip. I got the temp to almost 1/2 and sunroof fully open so outside air can circulate. My heater vents became so hot that I almost burnt my finger touching them!. Car survived and I got home ok. The vents did NOT melt or distort after that event. Heater was on FULL. I just pointed the vents upwards, so hot air will rise up to the sunroof.

ha ha, that's why I always scratch my head when I hear of ppl trying to fit all the big 'fire breathing' monsters into their UDMs and running them in malaysia. Our weather is just not exactly suitable for these engines especially when fitted into tight enclosure like the 3 series. Unless it is used only for serious track only or weekend run, its like a timebomb waiting to explode every time we drive the car.
