Adios.Taken on the day of delivery to the buyer. Just over 2 years and 23k spent not including tax, insurance, petrol. Worth it? Absolutely. I had lots of plans. The fantasy begins with a nice box (UUC, RE, etc.) and ends with a 5-speed manual with LSD. Wake up. Due to the need to change a lot of parts, the car is mechanically stock. The rims, paint, ICE and HID are of course extra. While the car wasn't modded, there is really no need to change what is inherently correct. The weight distribution and hence, balance, is spot-on. Everything else falls into place. Especially with the 2.8 litre M52. Flexible, responsive and super smooth, this powerplant never fails to impress when you’re in the mood. And when you're not, the generous low-end torque makes town driving even more of a cinch. Together with excellent NVH control, solid (but heavy) construction and ok build quality (we're talking mid-90s here), this car is an amazingly accomplised all-rounder. Being an automatic though, I could never really warm up to it. It was frustrating knowing the potential thanks to the ever-eager engine, balanced (but not tight) handling and enormous grip. After a couple of hairy experiences attempting to downshift manually on the usual country route, I wrote off the automatic, and maybe the car a little, on that day. At the extreme (in SIC), the car is no fun for me. Its heavy. 100% urban (i.e within Klang Valley) driving just didn't make sense. I didn't really need the capacity in the city. I stopped driving the car on what little outstation trips I did in any case - the tickets were coming a bit too often. Consumption was fair though. Full, 400km.

very sad woor bro woo......

well every dark cloud has a silver lining...a JCW??? :D
gluck my brother..... :eek:k:

Yes, I do miss it. I saw it again today, when I passed the ori rims to the buyer. Its not perfect, but it was certainly devastating on the expressway (this is the usual angle they'd see the car!). :D :D :D

That said, fixing up a Miata during my long break served only to confirm that what I really needed was a manual tranny. See my efforts:

Through the E36 though, I really understand why BMWs are so coveted. The taglines are no BS. Too bad for the yups who don't know or don't care if their BMWs are RWD or FWD.

Of course, my mind has been focusing on what could take its place. As you know, the wife bought a myvi and I've reverted to the Sentra. There is therefore a car to commute, etc.

Mr. Hartge (damn, that's the best sig I've seen!) I've always loved the new MINI but, without having driven one, its still a FWD. Also, 2 doors only - at that price, I would only be able to afford to run 1 car, so that discounts it as a playmobile.

Further, a recent property purchase must take priority. But if, things get more comfortable in a few years, I'll fulfill the vow I took in the last forum and make Auto Bavaria an offer on their 4-year unsold 116i manuals!

Think I'll test drive one soon just for the hell of it. I've heard rave reviews on the 120i from the E30 maniacs here. If its good enough for them.............

Trawling through the net for reviews on the 116i yielded this one. Relevant extracts, clearly written by someone on our wavelength:

"For the same reason, the firmly-suspended Sport trim level isn't the one most would choose on typically bumpy British roads. The 1.6-litre engine is good for 115bhp and will accelerate the big-boned 1-series through 60mph in 10.6 seconds and on to a 125mph top speed. The lightest of all the 1-series models, the 116i is also the nimblest. The low weight in the nose of the car makes turn-in razor sharp and if you wanted a car that demonstrated how relevant rear wheel drive is to cars with modest power you couldn't choose better. Put simply, the front tyres are utterly unburdened with trying to put power down and can devote themselves to steering. It may sound simple but it works. There's no scrabble, tug or kickback through the steering wheel. At first, you may not be able to quite put your finger on why the 1-series feels so much better to drive than, say, an equivalently priced Volkswagen Golf or Audi A3 but punt one down a twisty road and it'll become apparent. What more powerful rivals gain on the straights the BMW claws back through the bends...The good news is that due to clever gearing of the five-speed 'box, the 116i doesn't feel a great deal slower than the 120i during everyday use.......The BMW 116i is a definite grower. The styling takes a little time to bed in and the big asking price and modest power may well exclude it from the shortlists of many buyers looking for a five-door funster. Their loss. Even if it isn't particularly quick in a straight line, the 116i rewards the keen driver with a level of tactility and poise utterly missing from all of its rivals. If BMW can get prospective customers into the driver's seat, they'll make the sales. "

Can relate to what u wrote about the auto 6 potter being heavy in city stop start driving. Definitely no fun. The BMW only shines when the road opens up a little unfortunately.

For City stop start driving, I enjoy the Jazz a whole lot more, but when the road opens up, I miss the E46 :)

Departing with a car always makes me teary eyed...afterall, she protected you ( & family ) thick & thin...

Anyway, as they said in cantonese ( & a poorly translated version ).....nothing disposed, then nothing new comes along. so I guess, you have to see that way....

good luck & stay in the forum!

Thanks guys! I'm still very much around cos I have too many pals here. But all gatherings will be a bit painful!
