Hi, recently, i've changed few stuff on the E30. The list such asa) New E36 tie rod end (right hand side)( i retrofiited E36 s.rack)b) M3 offset bushingsc) LUK full clutch kit for 325i manual gearboxd) rear susp mountingAfter i take the car out from the workshop happily, i found that the clutch itself is "low". Not as much free play as last time (sachs OEM clutch kit). Sometimes it judders when i accelerate and when i switch to reverse, it judders. 2nd problem, When i turn right, the left hand side have some "duk duk duk" sound as i turn, when i turn left, there's no sound. Bear in mind i only changed the right side tie rod and i didnt change the left one as it is fine. Does this have to do with the M3 bushing which pushes the wheels further out which stresses the other bushings to cause the sound? It was freakin fine and handles like a champ, after i changed to M3 offset bushings, i kinda dislike the feeling although the steering wheel feels so much more stiffer and less free play which i like. 3rd problem, the rear susp mounting, i've discovered there are lots of clunking at the back after i changed to brand new rear mount, does this indicates that my rear susp is failing? I'm running on a pair of bilstein black rear suspension on the car and it doesnt clunk as usual. If there's anyone who's facing the same problem as me or HAD faced the same problem as me, please help me. Thank you. Currently, i dont feel like driving the car anymore :( Chris

anyone? now when i drive, there's something "loose" underneath the car, clunking here and there. When i corner, also clunk sometimes. ARGHHH!! FRUSTRATED! so unhappy now

Probably bad installation or parts mismatch bro. Just take it back to the shop that installed it for you and get it fixed. Good luck...

Sorry for your car...meeto was right, just go back to the workshop...it must be something wrong somewhere..with so many good feedback for M3 bush(even Fab customised them!!)......it just cannot be the end result....

IMHO, i think you should changed both tie rod end...it just like changing tyres...you can change one at a time, but better in pair.....

Sorry again, me no sifu, i don't know much about technical thingy...cannot say much also, somebody esp bro Teejay will shoot me! but i think you should check your top front absorber mounting.....as an old car, we have to expect the unexpected......sabar je laa..:burnout:

As for clonking sound underneath...it might be just some loose exhaust nut.....

Wish you all the best........

My stock E30 also have some sort of clunking noise (behind) when going over uneven roads. It sounds as if loose spare parts are flying around in the boot (took out all the stuff in the boot but still problem persists). This problem was there when i bought the car 5th hand early in 2005. Asked a few mechanics about the problem but no one seems to know, they kept saying everything is fine. Now i'm just living with the noise.

SC

the clunking sound has been detected!!! Its the exhaust that is hitting during uneven road!! aihhh, more money again T_T

As for the clutch, maybe run in abit more and hopefully the judder will subside

chris

i'll try and answer to my best knowledge
1. clutch was not aligned properly with a clutch alignment tool, not many know of this, one big symptom is the clutch slipping feeling - go get it aligned or go to a workshop that has and can do this, else your clutch will wear out prematurely

2. e36 tie rods have a stop nut , if you changed yours new without the nut installed, your steering will eat into the side of your chasis, e.g. tire hitting the sides - solution is to check if the nut has been installed as e36 sterring dimensions differ from e30s so there is a need for the 'bumpstop' nut

3. rear absorber mounts have a this gasket between the body and absrber, so if this is missing you will still get the sound occasionally - go buy or make this gasket, think it cost rm2 or so, but will eliminate the sound

add- you may have bought a wrong clutch kit as the clutch kits has to have corresponding clutch slave cylinder which are sometimes longer or shorter

what is your gearbox model ,where did it come from, which car, which model, which year, and did you use the old slave pump or did you use the slave pump that came with the gb?

thx you teejay for your input,

1) Regarding the clutch alignment, i dont think he did aligned the clutch when he fix in the brand new clutch kit

2) Will find out regarding bout the nut

3) I didnt put in the gasket and there's definitely sound. Will buy the gasket soon

4) Regarding the clutch kit that i bought, i double confirm with the person and he said that it is for the E30 m20b25 manual gearbox, my gearbox is getrag 260 and it comes with the car, The engine is a 1988 if im not mistaken and im using the slave pump that is on the car. I didnt know that the clutch kit consist of so many things. The clutch kit i got consist of clutch pressure plate, clutch cover and clutch bearing.

Thx u

double clarify on that clutch set for you,

260 getrag came with few variations, single mass, doublemass and twin mass
flywheels ,each of these had different lengths of slave pump and if you are lucky enough you may even be sporting the 260G from the 323i, has a shorter bellhousing, lightweight-4kg less-and but all qualities of the heavier 260g from the 325i

e.g. if your original clutch came with twinmass, your slave pump would be short, then if you replaced with a clutch kit from a single mass or doublemass, the length would of the slave pump may just clear the pressure plate, thus the low clutch feeling, and short clutch release, and no twinmass and doublemass are not the same even if some people say it is......

you need to double check part numbers and see which models the clutch set is made for

to solve your problem, you may need to source a longer shaft slave master, its not easy, or if your luck holds, try and get the bigger slave pump from the older e23, your clutch wil feel like feather:rock:

Chris....how's your car now?problem solved?
After lenghty explanation from Master Teejay....kindly share with us the end result...

Btw, how much you got for E36 steering rack & cost to replaced it?

Just to bring this thread back, Most of the problem are solved, just that the clutch is bugging me, due to financial reason, im unable to fork out money to justify my clutch problem, but i do discovered some new things.

Im still having problem shifting in high revs, so, one night, i got so frustrated and rev it to red line in 2nd gear, i was surprise to find that it's abit easier (not always) to shift compared to shifting during 3-5k revs.

Another new discovery is that whenever i rev from 3k onwards, vibration can be felt underneath the car and after around 5k onwards, the vibration is gone and the car is silent! Initially i thought my driveshaft bearing or some mounting gone, so i tried putting the car neutral during 4k revs and there's no vibration, so im sure that it is the gearbox thats producing the vibration.

Again, im still a student and cannot afford to pay the workmanship to take down the gearbox, one thing that im afraid of is to discovered that im using the wrong clutch kit, which means the workmanship that im going to pay will be a waste.

Anakin bro, i bought the E36 steering rack for RM750 and the cost all together is around 1k to do the conversion as slight modification need to be done in order to fit the steering rack as E36 steering rack is slightly shorter than E30 s.rack.

thank you for your attention.

Chris

Chris...glad to hear that, btw where did you do the steering rack conversion?
