On the heels of the big BMW turbo 4-cylinder news yesterday, SCOTT26 has provided some dates for the switchover of certain BMW models from the current inline 6-cylinder to the new twinpower turbo I4 motor, as well as the end of production of the current 3-series, M3 and 1-series.Here is the I4 switchover and end of production schedule:

  • E82/E88 1 series to end production in 1st Quarter 2012

Some will surely be missing the smoothness of the straight six...

these turbo 4 pots not smooth mer? its more powerful also right?

I'll reserve judgment on the new I4 turbo till I drive them... I'm sure BMW has given ample thought to the engine's refinement.

Mizhan, time for you to buy a M3 now..before they become obsolete....like how we talk about 2002 and CSL now....one day our kids will talk bout the M3 in similar fashion.....hmmmmm

i'm gonna wait till E92 M3 prices hit rock bottom. it won't be long considering their high road-tax :)

judging with the amount of electronics the current crop of Ms has, it won't last 20 years or even 15... unless the whole electronic system is overhauled...

Agreed bro....that's why the 30 or 36 M is still the fun stuff...driven on pure driver instinct and gutt feel...sometimes can end up in the ditch also!!! Rather than having that ASC light blinking or rev meter telling you when to change gear.....hahahahaahah.....myself kutuk 46 and 92 M since cant afford!!!!

so, once the Turbo I4's are used, does that mean the death of I6? what about those turbo I6's?

Don't panic guys. 4 cyl are not new to BMW. Remeber they produced one of the best motors with 4 cyl. S14. and reliable m40-42. They will surely keep inline-6 motors may be for M cars
