Hola morgen to all forumer, I need some advise here about E46 but it quit rare version in malaysia (I believe so) it's called E46 316i SE UK Spec 1.9SOHC year 2000 Manual. Am about to buy this machine but I don't have any experience with this machine. Previously my brother use E46 318i 1.9 (A) sometimes I use his car, even I can feel the fuel is quit similar to my Honda City right now. So what is all of u can advise me on this.. Model : BMW E46 316i SE UK SpecCC : 1898 SOHCTransmission : ManualYear : 2000 Price is about 30K - loan can't go anymore but no problem with that... • Idle is constant and smooth
• Clutch test: On a slight incline at ~30 mph, put the car into fifth gear and floor it. Does the clutch slip?
• Any CELs or SRS or any other lights on in the dash?
Cooling System
• Hoses (cracks, fitments, etc)
• Where does needle sit on the water temp gauge?
• No dry coolant visible in engine bay
• Is the engine driven fan still present?
Engine
• Belts (cracks)
• Pulleys (any excess noise/play)
• No excess A/C compressor noise
• Any suspicious oil residue under car?
• Condition of gaskets: Oil pan/timing cover/valve cover/head
• Air filter is in decent shape?
• Intake boot is not cracked
• Oil level is in range of ‘half full’ to ‘one half quart over max’.
Exhaust
• Muffler mounted securely
• Heat shields are secure and don’t rattle
• No deteriorated/rusted areas
Transmission/Differential
• All gears engage/disengage smoothly.
• Clutch pedal feels solid.
• Clutch line isn’t leaking
• Is the clutch delay valve still present?
• No transmission seals are leaking
• Transmission mounts are securely installed and not worn
• Guibo/Flex Disc is not cracked or worn
• CV boots are in good shape
• No excessive play in joints
• No differential seals are leaking
Power Steering
• Reservoir is full
• No PS fluid leaks from the hoses/rack/reservoir
• The wheel turns without making excess noise at parked idle
Suspension
• All bushings are solid and not cracked or worn
• Front control arm (2)
• Front sway bar (2)
• Rear shock mounts (2)
• Rear trailing arm (2)
• Upper and lower (wishbone) outer rear ball joints (4)
• Upper and lower (wishbone) inner rubber fittings (4)
• Rear sway bar (2)
• Rear sway bar endlink (2)
• Differential carrier
• Rear Subframe (4)
• Area where rear subframe is connected to body is solid and not cracking
• Shocks/dampeners are solid and not leaking fluid
• Tie rods are in good condition

Yeah thanks for the tips, but no one know the details on this 316i SE machine specifically? Even when asking several conti foreman friends they also dont have any idea with this.. Really this is rare model make me quit afraid to taking a risk caused the price is quit similar with 318i which I think most of E46 on the road commonly use this model, but 316i SE even trough google search, dosen't really much info to get.
What do you think if the model is quit rare, or if u guys in my shoes, willing to take the risk or just find other model like 318i, 320i and other common model...

from wikipedia, the 316 shares the same engine as earlier versions of 318, with a detuned M43TUB19 engine. based on that assumption alone, i guess mechanically any mech/foreman who's familiar with 318 or even the e46 platform should be able to diagnose and maintain the engine.
have not came across ppl who own a e46 316...but saw a few e90 316 in singapore tho. so in terms of experience, we do lack in 316-specifics. If you can hold on to the purchase, join us for TT normally on Fridays at MMZ Bkt Jelutong so perhaps some of the e46 guys can assist.

One of the many ways [technical specs], imho is refer to realoem where you may refer on parts difference or similarity [as the case may be] and also to compare price difference. Granted, this is purely academic...
For real life experience reviews/comparisions... that may be somewhat difficult but not altogether impossible. Mr Google is your best friend now! Search for reviews, jouranls/blogs etc out there in the virtual world. You are bound to find what you are looking for... Good luck
