Engine rpm not stable

I have an E46 318i yr 2000. my problem is during idling, engine rpm drop to below 500rpm.but then stable again near 1000rpm about 10sec. Then drop again. sometime engine will shutdown. But,The engine had no problem during driving.Anyone please advise...:wink:

Could be yr camshaft / temperature / crank sensors. Have the computer check.

you may want to try to check your MAF as well as the ignition coils/cables.

Same problem with you before..............check my IVC or ICV near by T.body got problem leakage of air. Seal and service with cost RM 40, problem solved.:wink:

Idle Control Valve. Have that checked like what kayz said. Could be that.

Better I try check the ICV first. If not then, check for another part.

ICV most likely. ICV also rarely damaged. You should try to remove ICV, it has a connector which you remove by depressing the C clip beside the link housing. Then remove the 2 allen keys bolts. When removing ICV, pay attention not to damage the gasket.

Remove gasket. Spray WD 40 or petrol into the two openings of the ICV. Let it drain tru. Use sofy bristal brush to dislodge any dirt. The clear wd 40 which is clear will flow out brown in color. Clean as best as you can but take care not to use force on the ICV metal valve inside.

Fix back. YOur engine should be purring like a cat !

I had similar experience on my E39 last month. It was due to air intake hose leak. After rectified, RPM back to normal. I think your problem may come from same issue.

I meet before.Either the low rev crank sensor or the spark cable(spark plug as well)

Could be the air hose intake behin the engine. I've replaced mine at Auto Bomin Jln Ipoh.
They will diagnos ur car first. spend less than RM 200.

Problems solved!!!
Only done the ICV cleaning.Change new gasket. After fixed back, the problems solved already..

yes, new ICV for E46 318i pre-facelift is around RM 600. ICV can be clean exactly like OldmanBM mention. unless it shows fault in GT1 then only u have to change a new 1.
