Been busy this past few weeks with so much happening that i didn't have the time to update this thread. Below are what have been done to the car

8th Nov
Car broke down again which i suspect is down to the crank sensor as the car would start when cold but didn't when the engine is hot.

IMAG1708-1.jpg

The next morning send it over to Autobahn Sunway to have the parts replaced which is fuel filter, crank sensor and change all the pulleys and belts
IMAG1722.jpg

Old fuel filter dated 07

Installed new
IMAG1727.jpg

Sorry couldn't take anymore pics cos was busy chatting with another OM while the work was carried out lol.

Now with the new crank sensor installed along with the filter and pulleys again she drives beautifully on the highways but during low speed or idling the problem came up again which really stumped me ... The engine would just dies off even though i change the crank sensor lol Upon starting again the car had rough idling very lumpy but when on mid to high rpm she's purrrs nicely. Went to optimum and have it read the codes via Autologic it came up with a Vanos exhaust side error. Anyway i went back home thinking that it could be the coils that causing the lumpy idle.

Since my new ignition coils arrive few days ago i decided to DIY again :4:

New coils

Taking off the valve cover which was very easy and revealing the old one

Comparison between new and old
IMAG1746.jpg

20 mins later all changed :4: Thanks to e34_lover for lending me his ratchet :top:
IMAG1747.jpg

Unfortunately upon starting up the idling was still lumpy ... Come monday morning i decided not to take chance and have it towed to Tedco Motorsport for further inspection and rectificatiion - 12th Nov
IMAG1749.jpg

It was diagnosed as having a stuck vanos on the exhaust side ... hence the we have to open up the top part of the engine which to my joy still looks clean and pristine for a 16 year old engine

Close up ... Sorry for the crappy pics
IMG_20121122_155137-1.jpg

When we took out the Vanos and take off the cover plate we were shock to see this
IMG_20121122_155714.jpg

In the pic the vanos at the top is what you would normally see and mine is at the bottom. Apparently it's filled with some sort of silicone and further checking with other mat salleh forums it seems to be a factory solution from BMW to stop the solenoids from moving ...

22nd Nov - Anyways after more than a week of deliberating (actually reuben was busy doing something else :slug:) we decided to install back the Vanos and see how it goes. What do you know ... It works like a charm !!!

Reuben decided to take off the Unichip as well to see how the car responds within this few weeks. The car now idling very smoothly and drives great  However reuben did point out that the clutch is getting thin and needs replacement plus need to check on the ICV and change the throttle position sensor (TPS)

To be continued ....

Lets hope it stops breaking down near your in-laws bro! lol

Here's a pic of our coils lol. I mean.... my v12's coils... I wish...

IMG_4736_zps11f53166.jpg

ICV cleaning is easy, except that you need to remove your whole intake plenum. Mine's removed yet again to do more work! Haven't updated my thread lol. Let me know if you need any help.

Keep up the good work!

Hahaha in hindsight better to break down near my in-laws than on some highways lol :p

Bought some items for the E36 ... Will update soon when i get back :4:

Beemer, it was fun rempiting with u in my little 1.3 rotary on d elite h/w yest, haha. Of course no fight. 3.2 vs 1.3, 321 hp vs 250hp. Next time have to call on big brother 335 to exact revenge. Was very impressed with d acceleration of yr car. I think a stock 335 will have difficulty keeping up. Did u ever dyno yr car?

Hehehe it was fun indeed bro :4: and it's not often i can get away from you hehehehe I'm sure if you brought your grey shark 335 i would be devoured and spat out definitely! ... Haven't dyno the car yet as i still need to change my vanos seal, CCV and vacuum hoses making sure the engine is in best state of health. Once that's done i will dyno her and put back the unichip to see if there is any performance difference.

Hahahahaha ... Yes it would have been fun and awesome if we did bro :4: Played with a V6 before they're really fast and agile! So am also a bit takut takut jugak at that time hahaha have to be wary of the Italians :4:

And your car looks immaculate  ... Do bring her next time on the next gathering or TT :top:

UPDATE

So after sorting out the Vanos ... The aircond was playing up one side is hot and the other side relatively cold * but not cold enough) Thats when i decided to give the Naidu, the aircond master, a visit

But before that managed to attend a charity event in KL and snap a pic of the 36 besides of another icon ... What a beauty!!! one day if got extra moolah why not
IMG_20121125_153019.jpg

Taking off the panel .... Didn't know the panel filter of the aircond is at the bottom of the dashboard hehe
IMG_20121126_154108.jpg

Not pretty but understandble considering the age ... Might look into that later for replacement
IMG_20121126_154055.jpg

Old filter literally tear itself away and probably clogging up the airflow
IMG_20121126_154151.jpg

New panel filter
IMG_20121126_163958.jpg

He then proceeded to the passenger side taking more panels off to get to the final resister aka hedgehog resistor
IMG_20121126_155303.jpg

Old hedgehog
IMG_20121126_163825.jpg

New parts :4: Ahem ... notice the driving shoe hehehe
IMG_20121126_163835.jpg

Ok so my hood on the left side like to pops out a bit ... naidu making soem adjustments ... It works for awhile then it happens again
IMG_20121126_171938.jpg

now the aircond is really cold and am really pleased with Naidu's work ... Would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone for anything aircond related but to be fair to him he do more than just aircond. He successfully troubleshoot my wiring problem on the fuse box and he has a good team :top:

A bit of teaser on my upcoming maintenance updates :4:

i just came across this thread and now it's subscribed. hehe.

great DIY bro. love the photos and captions.

and i hope it's not too late to say congratulations for your decent acquisition. i am planning to get one as well. but the ordinary one lah not the ///M.

Good job B33mEr!

So was the main problem the filter or the FSU?

I had the same problem in my car (one side cold one side hot) but it was because the gas was low. Topped up now with tracer to check if it is leaking. No issues so far and aircond is very cold.
Also having an intermittent FSU problem, blower randomly goes off. Has only happened twice in 8 months or so though.

Thanks bro :4: E36 is a great platform indeed it's light and nimble comparatively to the E46 and with less electronics it can be a reliable car. Good luck in the search for your dream E36 bro :top:

Thanks bro :4: It was the FSU according to Naidu, with the filter however i suspect it may causes condensation due to the fact that the filter blocked the airflow. Oh! i forgot to mention that the aircond gas was low too and Naidu refill back the gas. It's been several months now and the aircond hasn't let up yet ... I was afraid that it might have a leak or something but fingers crossed so far so good :4:
