overhauling a E36 gearbox cost how much?mine g/b seems like going to kaput already, there is a ' ! ' sign in a gear icon appear on my meter.

since tis icon appeared, it couldn't engage to lower gear even im running at 10km/h.feels like engaging 3rd or 4th gear... but after i restart my engine,it seems to be ok until the icon come up again..

Happened to me before. When the "!" sign comes ON, it means gearbox transmission error. When it happen, the gearbox is "automatically" default or engage in 3rd gear. (allowing you to limp to workshop) The error could be due to:-
1. low ATF oil
2. solenoid faulty
3. g/box filter choke.

check the oil level in the g/box first.

Change the oil and filters in the gearbox if your mileage > 100,000 km.

Solenoid failure and function can be done via modic diagnostic tool.

bro jarance, when i get my car on tis Feb i went to change all the wear & tear parts like timing belt,bearing,bushes & change ATF oil...

so in my case it could be solenoid?

Those are the wear and tear parts for the engine and power steering. Most mechanic will not service or check the gearbox unless they are told to so so. This is because gearbox seldom give problem as compared to the engine.

When you get the "!" sign, the auto transmission management controller will tell the ECU that it is facing some problem. The ECU will record this error and will "tell" the Modic when the Modic "ask" for error message.

BTW, we use ATF for the power steering and gearbox transmission.

Modic is a diagnostic tool which is used to communicate with the Engine Control Unit (ECU). It can also be used to reset all alarm in the dashboard like ABS etc. other function like reset the "Service Bar" and Inspection Light is also part of it function.

It can come in many form. Laptop and handheld display are some of the form that you see your mechanic will have. If your mechanic don't have this diagnostic tool, maybe you should advise them to buy one.

bro,,tis is a normal engine a local 318I sohc engine single cam....reaible engine just a bit underpower than the 318is MODEL...but average oky... promblem always air flow system... gearbox is personal rokemen GM gearbox buy toyota gear oil change buy from toyota dealer,,tis oil come direct from japan,very good.only the oil gear atf.. anything u need to help or advise just say..tq d

i'll service my air flow tis weekend then go find out wats wrong wif my gearbox later next week.

any recommended workshop/mechanic?

Why not you try a reputable workshop at Cheras, Call Mr. Wong for appointment 0123707571. His price is fair and yet very experience but you have to make appointment. It will be good to dropby his place to have your car checked and then come back again for him to work on it.
