I think it's better for me to have a separate thread for my e36 ... Haven't figure out a name for her yet lolThe E36 driving experience have been a revelation to me it highlighted my inadequate driving skills and the raw driving experience of the e36. It's been a humbling experience so far despite the excitement of owning an M car ... My long term goal is to make it a reliable daily drive car which i later found out is not an easy thing. It is an old car albeit relatively well taken care off with some track mods. You have the noises, the creaking and groaning which i accept it as part and parcel of owning such a car and so far i'm loving it when it all comes together lol There are few issues which i will be addressing and documenting it in the coming months. This past few weeks i have been ordering and collecting parts since parts for the evo is almost non-existent over here except for the common items shared across the e36 range.Parts collected so far spark plugs, MAF, crank sensor, complete pulleys with belts, fuel filter, header gaskets, exhaust gasket, plugs gasket and O2 sensor
Then there's the fuel pump which is very difficult to get, it requires 3-5 weeks waiting time
The car was having difficulty starting until it didn't want to start which means the fuel pump is dead. I didn't want to incur towing charges lol so i muster up the courage and decided to change the fuel pump myself. So below are the steps taken to install a new fuel pump :4repare the parts and tools which includes a fire extinguisher LOL Just in case :thefinger:
Disconnect the battery ... This is very important as you're reducing the chances of a short circuit happening while changing the fuel pump ... You can never be too cautios
Pull the rear seats out
Proceed to unscrew the 4 screws
Which will reveal the pump
The hose connector which is a pain to take out (Big thanks to e34_lover for guidance hehe)
The latch on the fuel connector is broken ... You're supposed to press it then pull out
But since it's broken i had to yank it out which broke a part of the old fuel pump
Fuel pump is held in place by a circular disc which you need a flat head screw driver and a hammer/mallethttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1662.jpgUse a thick cloth or kitchen towel as you do not want to damage the circular ring ... then give it a good few tap. That should unscrew ithttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1661.jpghttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1663.jpgCarefully take out the old pumphttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1664.jpgSide by side comparison with the fuel pump (new o-ring cost RM25, worn o-ring can cause the smell of fumes in the cabin)http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1666.jpgThe inside of the fuel tank lolhttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1667.jpgThen immediately proceed to install the new pump http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1668.jpgThe we screw back the circular disc ... Make sure you really tighten it use all your strength then give it a couple of good tap with the flat head screw driver just to be surehttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1674.jpgReinstall the electrical connectors and the fuel hose ... Close the cover and tighten back the 4 screwshttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1676.jpgConnect back the battery terminalhttp://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1677.jpgAt this point DO NOT start your car ... You need to prime it you do this by turning on the car (position 2) and wait for 45 second then off then repeat back once again. You can hear the fuel pump whine when you're doing that. http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1679.jpgAfter that say a prayer then start the car :4: Check for fumes and if everything check out re-install the back seat. There you have it ... Job done :rock:http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1680.jpgTools that were used during the installation :4:http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/B33MER330/E36%20Maintenance%20and%20DIY%20pics/IMAG1681.jpgMy reference: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E36-Fuel-Pump/E36-Fuel-Pump.htmwww.realoem.comAlso big thanks to e34_lover and Enkil for the advice and help :top:
