bro's and sifumy car engine is having a overheating problem.. the problem started when my temp reading cross to the red area. i noticed that there is no water leaking problem and fan problem. at first i suspected that my engine oil dried up and my assumption was right...i was amaze on how this problem occur since there is no sign of oil leaking. when i open the engine cap, i noticed white smoke come from it.so i decided to top up the engine oil..after top up the engine oil the overheating problem still occur!(damit!)when the 2nd overheating occur, this time i notice white smoke come from under the hood..after some observation, i found out traceable water mark on the road(mayb because i over done the car when the temp reach red zone) so i top up the water with tap water. no sign of water leaking or spare tank crack..does the overheating occur because of my engine problem???by the way my car is E46 318i 1999(old kind of engine)...please can somebody help me...in desperate need of help

Bro check whether there are traces of oil in your radiator coolant, or signs of creamy 'mayonnaise' in your engine oil cap area (water entered engine).

If there are traces of above, might be you have a blown head gasket. I sure hope it doesn't though...

If there's no evidence of water leaking then there is one possibility your thermostat somehow jam/stuck at close position thereby preventing the coolant to cool the engine effectively. Eitherway i would recommend you to NOT drive the car until your mechanic diagnose the problem. You don't want to aggravate the situation even more.

As bro haywire mentioned do check for oil traces in the coolant or the milky substance on the engine oil cap. Is this the first time you've had experience of engine overheating or it has happen before? Also bear in mind BMW 4 cylinder engine is notorious for oil sludge

bro, i notice the water in the radiator coolant have trace like oil...but i wasn't sure if it oil or not...bro Beemer..my mech Tan from autobahn also say it myb cause by the thermostat..but he also wasn't sure because cannot inspect my car due to i'm in penang now.this is the first time overheating problem occur since i bought this UDM.any one from penang know where can get a good mech??really sakit kepala la when this kind of problem occur...really spoil my raya mood

try to look for coolant dripping on the floor. it could be head gasket blown, punctured radiator n hoses, waterpump leak or thermostat. if no drip, probably thermostat or head gasket blown and the coolant slipped into the cylinder. if thermostat it is a cheap fix. try google around thermostat that suits your engine

Relax bro mielo...this is a love and hatred relationship with UDM...hope it will be solved very soon..

No overheating means its not a BMW...hehehhe :4:

Can't agree more with that statement. Take sample from your radiator and put it in a clear glass to see amy oil traces. Oil might also originate frm the g/box oil cooler. How long have u been using this car?

A year ago when I was berhari raya at Jalan Ipoh , pak guard came to me , "boss your car in trouble".

Opened the hood and bleed screw melted and steam rushed out. Just a single plastic screw ruined my day.

Drove her home very slowly and the temp gauge is 3/4 :D

Now i have spare bleed screw in my car. It once broke into half on sunday while travelling frm Kuantan to KL

he he ....not a weekend passes by without me opening the hood to give the engine a once over......

bro mielo
this is no proton....you MUST give the engine an oil level and coolant level check before going outstation.
and mind the temp gauge.if its in red...STOP and shout for help....and pray it's not too late for the cylinder head

bro's and sifu..

my problem settle already!..found out that the overheating caused by faulty termostat..but because of the mech at ZF auto lack of analytic knowledge, he say that the problem was cause by my radiator tank tersumbat and he changed it...due to his stupidity, it cost me extra RM580 and still dosent solve the overheating problem..after some discussion, i told him to check the termostat because my mech at sunway say that the problem maybe originated from the termostat..at first he decline to check n say my termostat is ok and not the cause of the overheating problem..after i persuade him to check then he open it and found out that my termostat coil broken already. got it change and cost me 9 hour of hari raya burn. here are the damage:

radiator tank : RM580
termostat : RM125 (got RM100 after arguing with him)

extra work done to my car, hehe:
front wheel bearing (L) : RM245
tie rod : RM160
skirt clip : RM40
5w-40 Sheel oil : RM200
workmanship : RM140

TOTAL: RM 1465.00 (Cry n cry)

p/s: my car run smoother, no tok,tok sound when hit hole and for sure no more overheating problem (cross finger). now im happy and sad all together. orang sebelum balik raya repair kereta, aku dah balik baru nak repair kereta...hampess..no more going to ZF Auto in penang after this..

Sabar bro mielo.. that is part and parcel of life bro..a lesson well learnt..

mielo86,
obviously your radiator tank is still ok. don't let the mechanic have it. he will sell to someone and make a profit (atas angin).

i thought so..that why i took back with me the old radiator tank. i wana sold it cheap..anyone interested PM me...willing to let go for around RM200 or less:wink:

U should have argued for half price of the radiator or else re-instate the old one. But again , i think sooner or later u still have to change . At least now u can drive outstation without worries. cheers

mentioned about oil cooler, when is the right time to replace before it got spoilt. Is it good to change after completion of 100,000 km? What and how to measure of it's life span and duration.?
