Greetings,Today I face the biggest problem with my E28.After warming up the engine around 5 ~ 10 minute, I took off. After just about 1 km driving, the car suddenly stop and the engine died.I try to start the engine so many time until my battery flat out.Call the nearest mechanic, he brought battery and jumper start kit, but still cannot start the engine. He trace off the problem, he found out that there is no current. he tried to change the wire. but still no current. He check up at fuse box, the current is aok.To cut the story short, the mechanic cant help me. I call towing lorry, and tow back to my house. Got charge for RM 40.So can you guys tell me what could possibly be the problem ?The air-cond, radio, power window, light is all OK, but the engine just wont start.Regards, maelzxps : I did call the nearest BMW service, LEE Motor. Mr. LEE himself accidentally pass through my car and he stop and give me his card, he said call them maybe they can take a look and help. I call and this man come and simply said, we cant repair old model, we dont have the equipment bla bla bla. Looks like they just cater newer BMW only, the oldies just wont cut ... :p So if you have "old" bmw (E21, E28, E30 etc) you dont need to go to LEE Motors because they cant repair your car.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

I personally could find the following causes from your description :

1. No spark to plugs
2. No fuel flow to the injector system
3. Failed fuel pressure regulator
4. Old/Fouled plugs which decided to give way
5. break in electrical ignition connection somewhere
6. ECU
7. Air Flow Meter
8. Throttle positioning switch

The engine doesn't simply die like this as these are very hardy engines. Just check any of the problems/causes listed above.

I normally send these E28s, 34s, 23s to MS brothers at Jln. Chan Sow Lin, off Jln. Sg Besi.

And this is my reply

Greetings,

Thank you for your info. I'm very much appreciate your valueble info as it will guide me to know my car better.

Sorry that I didnt state earlier in my post, I'm at Alor Star, Kedah D.A. With my current problems, I dont see any way to bring my car to your suggested shop :)

I'll have to bring my E28 to some mechanic around here.

Anyway this car used to serviced at MPower by my uncle, before I inherit this car and bring the car here (in northern Malaysia).

From your problem listing, I find this is the probably cause :

1. No spark to plugs
4. Old/Fouled plugs which decided to give way
5. break in electrical ignition connection somewhere
6. ECU

The mechanic that check my car, and try to jump start it, find that there is no current, so it should be no spark to plugs.

Maybe because of old/fouled plugs, but since there is no current, so that also cant be very sure.

This car is old and need rewiring, I already start savings some money in order to do a full rewiring, forumers tyke said he could get cheaper price. So it could be some short circuit. Not confirm also.

Last thing is ECU. This I really dont know, I'm very new to car and willingly to learn step by step, but I just didnt expect to learn it the hard way, today.

Regards,
maelzx

hey dude, sorry to hear bout ur e28.hope things will b ok though.
i dont know but mebbe u could check ur alternator?
tht could b the problem!
or it could b ur battery.when was the last time u changed urs?
try those things i mentioned.
for the alternator, try servicing it by changing the carbon plates coz they do wear out unevenly after some time.batteries tend to last bout 2 years plus on me so mebbe u could try tht too.
all the best dude.
try all the steps given by the sifus...
good luck..keep in touch aight!
regards,
-brad-

Check for no spark, problems could be ignition coil, further down errr i;m not sure wether u car have crank pulse sensor. If it does have, then the pulse sensor is spoilt. I encounter this on my E30, car cannot start, no spark even after change to new ignition coil.

Update2 ...

My uncle come back and inspect the car. But he didnt have tools along, so cant really do anything.

So have no other way, send the car to workshop. Call towtruck and mention my car num plate, lol they recognise already :p my car kept on getting famous.

Tomorrow will go and have an update on whats going wrong with the car. Hopefully it will be done by tomorrow.

A week without driving my UDM, I turning into crazy man already ... huh.

Anyway tyke, already done the no plate. Waiting for the car to fix the num plate ... it really looks cool! :)

latest update.

i go to the workshop. sadly see my car hasnt be able to start yet. the mechanic said might have to replace ignition coil, and at that time i arrive to the workshop he already go out to source for the ignition coil ...

even with replacing the ignition coil, that mechanic cant 100% confirm my car will get back its life ... so sad.

Since you are in Alor Star,
Nearest real specialist to my opinion is ChuSeng Motors 04-2813268 in Penang.
You can call him to assist you in diagnosing your problem.

Good luck!

The fuel pump relay is already replaced with new one. But still didnt solve the problem.

Thanks for the contact num ccl68. Will try with him if still can't cure the problem.

maelzx, is you car manual trans? Will the engine rotate with attempting to start? Or does it rotates, but will not start?

My car is auto.

I dont know how to explain, does the engine rotates or not ?? How to know ?

Anyway when I try to start, it got sound, well you know when you want to start the engine it will sound like that ... But engine wont start.

Now still waiting for the item to arrive. No part no start.

Sounds like a problem I hv with my ride - engine cranks but won't ignite. I dun der fuel reg thing too, chagd distrib cap & rotor arm, ign coil - no help at all, back to same problem.
I suspect now, it's either the fuel pump relay or the ignition control switch. :dunno:

I dont know how to said this, should I be happy because I share the same problem with you ? Or should I be sad ...

Anyway I hope my car problem wouldnt get that complicated ... Since I got no 2nd car, now riding cub chai only lerr ...

Ok, according to my Haynes Manual, the symptons of your problem could relate to the following i.e. Engine rotates but will not start

1. Fuel Tank empty
2. Battery Discharged (engine rotates slowly) - Don't think this could be the cause as you have attempted to jump start
3. Battery terminal connections loose or corroded
4. Leaking fuel injectors, faulty fuel pump, pressure regulator
5. Fuel not reaching fuel injection system
6. Ignition components damp or damaged
7. Fuel injector stuck open
8. Worn, faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs
9. Broken, loose or disconnected wiring in the starting circuit
10. Loose distributor mounting bolts causing ignition timing to wander
11. Broken, loose or disconnected wires at the ignition coil or faulty coil.

Anyway, I will send to you via e-mail chapters of the manual related to your problem. Hope that will help. BTW I also have an E28 528i. Justin drives the car KL-JB-KL. Check out the car in roadfly E28 gallery

Go to ur ignition key & try cranking der engine. When it fires, go back to ur ignition coil & plug der HT cable back in der ignition coil.
If dis method don't work, cum back online. I'll describe another way u mite get success. wink.gif[/b]

My car currently in the workshop, waiting for new Ignition Coil (as told by the mech, new as is newly bought) So sorry that I couldnt try your tips. I would try it if you've reply to this thread a week earlier (at that time I havent brought my car over to the workshop)
