What is the different between this 2 engine M43 & N42, I believe both have the same 4 cyc, 143 bhp at 6000rpm and 1995cc.The looks is different N42 look compact whereas M43 look "loose" I believe it is the year of the car that determine the engine.Someone or some sifu please help out on the explanation and also the pros and cons of both engine.Mine car is M43.

erm..or do u mean the N-42 for the E46?... afaik, the m43 is an e36 engine..i stand corrected though..

m43 is a 4-pot single cam engine, 1.8
n-42 is also a 4-pot but twin cam, 2.0

if i am not mistaken

M43- 116HP for E46 318i year 1999-2001 (1900cc) Engine loose, empty look when u open the bonnet
N42- 143HP for E46 318i year 2002 above (2000cc) engine compact look

This is my undertanding (am i right?)

if he is reffering to E46, i think N42 is a 6 potter

mouse ... you're right. M43 is taken from the E36 model and is using timing chain, unlike M42.

m42 is also timing cjain

and it is a 1.8 DOHC

while M44 which is also timing chain

is a 1.9 and could b found in Z3

both however produce 140+- hp :getyourfactsright:

yup..fabs is right...if the engine in qn is the N-42..its the valvetronic 4-pot 2.0 used in the E46..:)..

in addition, the M43 in E46 is the M43TU (technical update) version. It produce the same HP but better torque. So, it's a updatd engine in the e46 than e36.

Some physical changes for M43tu are the intake manifold is different, the injectors are different, it uses MAF, different computer box.

Similarities, both uses timing chain, single belt, SOHC, 8 Valve, electric fan.

N42 is comes from the M44 which is the DOHC of the 4 potters. However, it has improved system which is the valvetronic. For more info on Valvatronic. Please refer to threads posted up b4.

So if anyone looking for a E46 318 with N42, what year should we look for? N42 is best right?

bmwsideways, thanks dude, didn't know M42 comes in timing chain.

the facelifted E46 318i comes with valvetronic.. From the factory with the 2.0 badge. Should be about 2002

And yes M42 M43 and M44 comes with timing chain... M42 runs with duplex chain. M43 single chain.

There's the N46..ECU upgrade from the N42..with 150hp and same torque at 200Nm.....i believe its from 2004 onwards..
