Found this while doing my reading, thought I'd shareKick-down switch Vehicles with M43 and M52 engines: The EGS control unit receives the signal for kick-down shifts via a line and a switch to ground. The switch must be adjusted such as to enable driving under full load, i.e. 100 % accelerator pedal position and the kick-down shift only takes place when the accelerator pedal is further pressed. Vehicles with N42, M54 engine as well as diesel models: The signal for kickdown shifting is sent from the accelerator pedal module (FPM) to the engine management system. The engine management system converts the drive control and kickdown detection into a corresponding CAN bus message and sends this to the EGS control.source : http://wds.spaghetticoder.org/en/zinfo/WET0703FB2460001.htm

yeah, that is correct.

M43 and M52 have throttle cable whereas N42, M54 and newer engine use drive by "wire".

Betw. throttle cable and drive by wire, which one has better response? I bet on the drive by wire!!

Yep..would like to know too. Thanks

Drive by cable is better response!

There MUST be good reasons as to why BMW engineers replaced the cable with electronics drive-by-wire system. Anyone care to do some research and publish the findings here?

electricity travel faster than mechanical speed. Less wear and tear and no jammed cable due to sticky cable.

Drive by wire throttle solves a few problems I guess

Greener - as the pedal input has to go through DME first, DME can apply the best throttle opening - for best efficiency
Traction control - cutting power by closing throttle
Cruise control - speed is controlled by the computer (DME) and shifts gear as necessary because DME has control over EGS

Some I can think of right now, if you are worried about safety, there are redundant sensors at the pedal making sure the input is correct

I like drive by cable better...more feel to it I suppose although I recognize the benefits for drive by wire. It is nice to have different car with different characteristic.
