I drive an auto. There's a slight thump from the low rear when decelerating towards a stop. It happens just before the car stops.....around when the gear downshifts to first gear. I had this similar thump before when I first bought the car several months ago, but it was a much louder thump......I changed the rear axle @ rear gear bush@ rear axle mounting) and the thump went away immediately. So naturally I thought this time its the same thing again, but mechanic checked and said my rear axle bush is okay. Instead he said its coming from the gearbox when the gear downshifts to first gear. Funny thing is that he says this is perfectly normal to have this slight thump.......but I never felt this thump until a month ago! ...... or maybe i've become more sensitive to sounds these days because I nowadays drive with the stereo on low. I've had this car for about 6 months now.Is this downshift sound normal? The mechanic is a well respected experienced ex-AB mechanic (I was told the dalai-lama consults him :) He even challenged me to test drive some of the other E46's in his workshop to prove that this thump is normal....I politely declined. Thought I'd consult this forum instead. Is he right or is my gearbox showing signs of damage? Everything else with the gears seem perfect......no other funny sounds....acceleration is great, gearknob shifting is smooth and silent.

Sounds normal (pun intended). I complained about this to AB during my regular service and they re-uploaded some "transmission software". It went away and behaved itself for the first week or so but its back again now. I've grown to live with it along with all the other rattles and squeaks.

yes same problem here...changed the rear axle bush and the problem sloved...but only for a few days..now back with a a louder thump when slowing down and stepping on the accelerator...

how to effectively solve this problem?

i think that's kindda normal to have the thump sound ..... i getting used to it already ...

it's rather normal la. any rear drive cars will get it ones with drive shaft will not (front wheel drive ones la)

my 325 is 40k mileage it has but very mild now la. sometimes a little small thud.

had 328 bad. reverse to d or other way. stopping hard acceleration everything.

i know one thing for sure. i whack kao the car silly that's why. it was 4 years old and 170k mileage. many wins and some loses on highways and byways.

get use to it la. treating it with tender loving care will definitely help

;) hello... sorry interuption. i am new in udm world.

using test gear ( computer checking ) cannot found / indicate the problem ??

Go check out that Autochild place... apparently, they are quite good with transmissions.
The thud! may be a common thing, but I don't think it's supposed to be the norm. Something is most definitely amiss!

Hi Guyz,

hmm, think I am experiencing the same problem too. Sent to AB complaining that when car is in low rev mode (i.e., in car park looking for spot, or climbing uphill slowly looking for parking spot..etc.) you could sense "high-rev" but the car is not moving forwards much. Reminded me of the old Manual Volvo cars, when you shift into first gear, and you release the clutch before stepping on "gas", you hear this high-rev sound, car doesn't move until it is fully engagged.

Anyways, long story short. AB did computer check and said everything fine (still not convinced) and then "re-programmed" Transmission. After this re-program, I get the "klonk" sound that has been mentioned here. Am tempted to go back to them to ask them to re-program to before the change.
