Ok, dont laugh. I want to ask: 1) Is it possible ... (err, lets describe in a scenario) (btw, im not IT guy) lets say i want to create a website but hosting is a must, is it possible for me to buy a server and place at my office with extreme high speed internet connection for hosting? 2) If my webpage will have a no of 20-30 million members (you can say the size might be equivalent to youtube.com) and the above is not, i will have to let other hosting co. to do it??? 3) And if the hosting co. dont give me the data??? 4) and the contents in the website is highly confidential (im not a terrorist) will the hosting co. curi my data?? and again, dont laugh...

1.yes..but u have to figure out your protection of the server. Servers need super cold rooms and protection from fire and water.

2.no you dont have to

3.data does not go through them first,it goes into your server so u will get it.they do not own the contents on the server therefore they cannot block any data.

4.you're able to lock up the server so nobody goes through it but you.hosting company's only provide you a place. you can use their server and pay rent or house your own there.your data is safe.

end of the day i recommend you to use a hosting company like Emerge or someone really good. You get protection and easy of mine with 24/7 IT tech support. Its cheaper than doing all on your own, believe me.Good luck!

Hosting such servers at a hosting centre is much more cost effective. The good ones are also very professional, hence they know how to take care of everything better than you do. The only thing you need to decide is who is your main audience, so you will know whether to host it here in Malaysia or in US. You will be surprised at how easy it is to let others do the hosting for you.

You should only host servers yourself if there is a very strong reason to do so.

I was quoted at about 30K-40K per month (and still there is a possibility the quote spec does not meet my demand)

for that sum of money, better i buat myself

That is a very big number for hosting!! Not sure what scale you are talking about.

But you have to understand, professionally setup webhosting or co-location data centers are designed with many considerations taken. Such as cooling, safety, redundancy, security, connectivity, etc. To setup something of this nature by yourself, will cost a lot of money in the short term. The consultancy costs of setting up such a centre, could already be a large amount.

trust me bmwsideways u do on ur own lagi mahal lagi sakit..lets the pro's handle it..and wth u doing for 40/k a month??!?!!! buy a me a m50 engine lagi baik

Website catering for 20-30 million members and content is highly confidential... Hmm quite a unique business model you are brewing up there.

Yea, price will depend on what specs and requirements you have. It can range from as low as a few hundred ringgit a month to tens of thousands. I have a 500 processor HPC on demand facility in OZ, and on peak usage, the electricity bill alone reaches AUD12k per month! Doesn't include people cost, HW, links, setup costs etc yet.

Can get a US based server to handle that for alot cheaper...
E.G....

Opteron Series - SATA Dual Opteron 2212 Dual Core Processor 2 x 250GB Hard Drive 2048 MB RAM 3000 GB Bandwidth 10 Dedicated IP address' USD $339.00 per month

If you can use all that up your doing well..
Sub Note: sites like php.net are located in these very same data centre's.

How many users do you think php.net has???
20,000,000 hits per day...
will be fine for all your users.
100MB links to 9 multi terabyte backbones...
3000 gigabytes of bandwidth.. (3000 x 1024 megabytes or 3,221,225,472,000 bytes of data)
thats alot of bandwidth to use in a month..
