my e30 died while driving and so push to one sidecalled the mechanic - he check the fuel , okthen check the ignition coilsaid no sparkokleft it to him sort it outlater got a call from himsaid engine is really gone case - ?????apparently he put back the ignition coil, changed the distributorcap and tried to start itstarted awhileand according to him the timing belt broke and now engine is write offomgbrothers is this true or am i being ripped offassuming the engine started and then the belt brokeis it possible to just change the belt and stuffI still cant belief that from just cant start enginenow become wirte offsigh - have i offended the gods

There is no way for the car to start if the belt is broken for an M40 engine.

If there is no spark, the problem could be the crankshaft sensor.

ask coupe e30 about his luck... driving to the workshop to do the timing belt, the belt putus...

why dun you inspect the engine, ask the mechanic to open up the belt cover to see if the belt really putus..

really feel for you bro..

the mechanice said it started a while after he changed the distributor cap
now wat if
he had plugged in the plug cords in wrong order
will this cause the timing belt to break
i wonder
if this screw up due to the mechanic

If the mechanic plug in the wrong HT leads, the engine would be firing on 2 out out 4. That means the engine rev would be very eratic.

As mention by pussy, the timing belt can easily checked by open the cover near the distribution cap.

If your timing belt is broken, the crankshaft will not rotate in proper sequence. The crankshaft sensor would not be able to detect the TDC and will inhibit the firing of the spark plugs and also the fuel pump. This is a fail safe feature to prevent further damage to your piston and valves.

If the timing belt break while the engine is running, chances is that you may have a couple of bend valves or worst piston kaput.

Best option is to do top overhaul.

had another mechanic open up the cover and see the belt
not putus - however could be the - wat u call it
teeth of the belt worn out
so
looks like have to tow it to workshop
put in a new engine

overhaul top end - y so xpensive ah
all quote more than 1k
put in a replacement engine is cheaper

Why do you have to do top overhaul if your engine did NOT experience Over Heating or Timing Belt Snapping while driving. I think you better get a third opinion from a mechanic who have work on a BMW before.

so it's not your mechanic's fault...

if i was you, i will do a top overhaul, cos the spare engine which you buy is like a lottery, dun know after the 1 week warranty, the engine will last for how long..

cheers..
