Hi guys... I recently bought a 2nd hand E30 318i and the car is in really good condition. I have a few questions but I'm no car expert so I'll just tell u guys some of the minor problems I'm facing in a simple way. 1st: I find that the 1st gear of my E30 runs out too quickly therefore I have to switch to 2nd gear real fast. For example, while in my friend's Myvi (m), I noticed he could run in 1st gear way longer than my E30 can. No matter how I balance the clutch and gas, the 1st gear doesn't last long enough which makes cornering out of a busy junction really challenging. What should I check/do? FYI.....the previous owner may have changed a thing or two.2nd: I want to get rid of the muffler (Apexi) the previous owner installed because its too loud and annoying. what exhaust should I get. Will the salesman take my current one in exchange? so I can get a new one cheaper... 3rd: There's cold water leaking from the sides of the middle section of the dashboard when I make a sharp and fast turn. It's definitely air-cond water but I want to ask u guys if u know exactly what the problem is. Thanks alot. I hope my ignorance does not annoy anyone.

congratulations on your new found love, and my my... so many questions incorporated in your introductory post.

well, my immediate suggestion is that you browse thru our threads.. that would perhaps answer some of your questions. offhand, 1) sounds like you're on a very tall final drive, 2) find a stock standard exhaust - it's the best, and 3) water condensation is dripping into the passenger compartment. go see naidu at jalan gasing to rectify that.

take some time and effort to get to know some of us here personally. lots of helpful standup guys here, who will be more than happy to guide you through the ways of the force without straying to the dark side.

Thanks for your early reply :) .... yeah I think I'm going to get a stock exhaust. Any idea how much it will cost? I've never been into a muffler shop. Btw ..... can you tell me more about the tall final drive thing.. if not, I'm gonna have to google it :(

she's definately an iconic car of the 80s and a pleasure to drive~
good luck with solving those issues one by one, but the pleasure in return is jus satisfying!

browse our classifieds.. or go to mudah; there's a few used exhausts there.

i was just assuming your complaint of your 1st gear running out too quickly is due to a tall final drive, or even just 1st gear itself! i dunno really. best bet is bring your car to the next tt and take some of us on a ride in it. show us what you meant.

Rather than stock, you can look for something like a Sebring or Ansa which wouldn't be too loud either.

By final drive, he's referring to the ratio of your differential at the rear. E30 318i post-88 years should have a 4.10 rear diff. You can check yours and see, there should be a metal tag on the diff next to the rubber mount indicating the ratio number.
I will say that even on 4.10, the 1st gear is kinda short IMO. :)

I c most of u are from KL. I wish I had one of u here in Penang to help me out. Thanks for all ure suggestions. I think problem 2 and 3 will be settled by this weekend. Problem one remains a mystery. I guess I'll have to take it to the mechanic and solve the problem. I'll post some photos of the car once I get those fixed.

i find that 4.10 is still fine to be honest, unless ur running 4.45 ration...which is ridiculously FUN xD

Sounds like the tuning is not right, please check your CO value...for the M40B18 it should be running between a value of 1.2 - 1.5

2nd: I want to get rid of the muffler (Apexi) the previous owner installed because its too loud and annoying. what exhaust should I get. Will the salesman take my current one in exchange? so I can get a new one cheaper...

This is one of the reasons why you have problem no 1. For the 318i, the original exhaust works best. I have gone through several configurations in the past and found myself returning to the original. Not much of a sporty note but best power and fuel consumption. FYI, BMW bench tests their engines with their exhaust systems. The factory exhaust has been fine tuned to your stock engine.

3rd: There's cold water leaking from the sides of the middle section of the dashboard when I make a sharp and fast turn. It's definitely air-cond water but I want to ask u guys if u know exactly what the problem is.

The seals on the casing of your cooling coil is not good anymore and your cooling coil is dirty. Dirty cooling coils condense water very, very quickly and can lead to overflow in the casing. Check also your drain tube, is it blocked?

To Kevster30. Very useful feedback. I hope problem 1 and 2 is linked like u said then the matter will be solved. Sounds like u have really wide knowledge on cars :) very very helpful. I hope I'll be able to look for the stock exhaust in Penang.

E30 is cheaper and older than Perdana,Waja and other proton car?!But one thing you must to remember is the safety and body thickness of a car. So,you must be proud of own a BMW!Although it was old,the car is more powerful than Proton car!Congratulation foowning a BMW car! Please take care of your car as you care of your health...
