Hi ALL sifus,I had a big scare on Sunday. Was driving to KLIA, speed at 150-160kms, from D'sara toll to KLIA, then KLIA to Sg Besi. Was using S-mode for accelaration, then E-mode after 130kms. Then, when I reached SgBesi toll, the telltale (!) sign showed on the gear indicator display!!! This usually mean that there is some problem with the gearbox (costly repairs!!). Had to drive home on limp mode.The next morning (Monday yesterday), I was planning to go to some workshop for diagnostic, worried for my wallet. Surprisingly, the gear display returned to normal, and the gearbox was ok!! Was driving it yesterday, and today, with no problems!! Still, do u know of this problem, or anyone who had it?? Could it be coz i pushed the gearbox too much?? Or is the gearbox due to die on me???Also, do u know of any good gearbox specialist??Pls help to offer some ideas/suggestions on what had happend.Thnx in advance.

am here to ofer u my experience on my 5s with similar experience.
My 525i 95 had similar malfunction on gearbox - code Trans Prog .
On dignostic machine, error code 65 and 42 something like that.
Code 65 was a solenoid problem, which can be replced , v costly MYR 550 for one piece but code 45 is without description.
hence was almost conned into reconditioning my gearbox my supposedly trusted mechanic for abt MYR 5.5K. 2nd opinion at M scope at Batu Cave there, better advice, could be just wiring faults, but need time for complete check up. All he did some WD 40 on the ECB unit n it was back up ok then.
For safer drive, should recommend for complete check on wiring as well as parts.

Thnx for the suggestion, I was thinking the same too.
Now the car gearbox is fine, so i supposed coz i pushed the car for almost an hour non-stop at 160km, the gearbox complains a bit by kicking the sensors.... :beaten:
Anyway, will keep a big lookout for it, in case it complains again

When the trans-program message is out, something is wrong with your gearbox, either it is slipping (well yours is not) or the solenoids is faulty. From your description, definitely one of the sensors is faulty. And a competent mechanic with a Modic diagnostic machine should be able to isolate the faulty ones quite easily.

brader, faulty light is on not only for gear box problem, it is general faulty. u must go to see a bmw doctor and scan/diagnose the faulty. may be solenoid valve in oil sump box, may be kick-down switch, or it can be anything.
I face it last year when i drove to lumut, perak, i always push kick-down switch at that time, then after a few km, the light is on, computer will lock all power and only 4th gear active at that time, all S button, kick-down swith not function as normal. u must stop and matikan engin, pull out key. after a few second (5 sec), u start ur engine back, and your engin should be normal back.. all fault or errors will be kept in ur computer box and can be erase during diagnose.
by hook or by crook, u must go to see a doctor and scan ur error. I suggest u go to Ah Wai at Bandar Tasik Selatan, he works in Bavaria before. gearbox expert. he has a Modick II machine, he can diagnose and tuning also your car.... try it...

I have been to Ah Wai, he diagnosed my gearbox to be leaking pressure, due to some leaking seals?? Solutions: overhaul gearbox, or put recon gearbox in. My preference, as also by many workshop fellas, overhaul it. My problem, cost. Quoted prices ranged from RM3K - RM4.8K. So now is still driving the E34, with care.
Anyone with better gearbox specialist?? Someone else pointed me to a gearbox doctor in Segambut, and in Batu Caves, anyone tried them???
