Guys,Requesting your valuable advise. What is the sign of worn rear wheel bearing on e36. My 318 is making a growling noise once my speed reach 120km/h and become louder as I increase the speed. Could it be the bearing? One more question, can the air-cond compressor be recondition? My air cond compressor already sound like 'breathless' already. These 2 noises really irritating, luckily already identified one. Thanks a lot.

It's quite simple to confirm bearing noise.

Jack up the car, spin the wheel, and put your hand on the shock absorber. If you can feel any vibration, it's the wheel bearing.

As for aircon compressor, why don't you give Naidu a call.

Lee,

thanks 4 ur reply.

I did ask the workshop to jackup the car and take out the tyre with brake lining mount, but they did not find any noise with the bearing. Could it be bcoz the problem still at initial stage that its only tend to happen at high speed?

thanks.

could be ur wheel bearing or final drive or ur tyres. Wheel bearing easy to detect..if not wheel bearing most probably from ur final drive or tyres.
For aircond compressor, if sound like jet fighter and the aircond was still cool and normal it could be the bearing. Yes! naidu can replace the bearing..

cheers.

'final drive', u mean the rear diffential is it?...oh..no! :beaten:

In my case it was the rear axle. Solution, get an used one or change the bearings (4 bearings I believe). What I did was to jack up the car and rev it up to 80 to 100 km/hr and stand below to hear the noise.

ok will do as per Lee instruction, hopefully it's the wheel bearing and not the others. The sound really annoying until when my fren take ride in my car and they really surprised "eh...bmw noisy like this arrrr? "

OK, so you ruled our the wheel bearings.
Does the so-called growling sound intensify when you accelerate and tends to decrease when you release the paddle? If it does, maybe it could be the propeller shaft or the couplings on it.

yep, its itensify during accelarating.
Anyway, juz tired of this sound already and during on my way back from KL to Penang when reached Tapah, I'd pushed the car a bit harder...140-150km/h constantly..sumtime 160km/h plus sport mode....and the noise gone until I reach home. Just left wt the engine ,wind and tyre noise. The way it shud be. Still in doubt what actully cause the problem.
Hopefully it will go away for good. Tomorrow is time to visit the workshop.
