Having problems with my E46 318 gearbox...car jerks when switching from 1st to 2nd gear....and vice versa...the warning light for the gearbox came out...stating that now in safe mode...need to send it to work shop....May i know what is the problem above? Car was in klang...so send it to a mechanic there, and he told me it is an electronic gearbox, all the signals inside...5 of them spoil...(wear and tear)...need to change all? is this true...can the sifus here help me justify this...Thanks.

Hi Taiko,

Does the gearbox indicator light stayed on and you are driving in safe mode all the time?

I had this problem before where the gearbox light came on. The car was on safe mode and i think in third gear. Have to drive at around 60 km/h to AB to get it rectified. When climbing hill on the highway I thought my car going to stall. Luckily there were no trafic jam on the slope.


It turned out to be a cable was disconnected and AB fixed it for free. I forgot which cable it was but was quite puzzled how a cable can be disconnected.

Sent my car to the workshop on the day i posted on the forum...24th Feb, till now, still have not gotten my car...

Going tomorrow to the workshop to check it out as it is taking too long...getting really worried...

Mechanic told me the gear signal got problem...apparently, he told me there are 5 signals...is this true? me really don't kwow what he is talking about...

Can someone show me the light?

Hey people,

A mate of mine had same problem. the revs go down between gears and you get a jerk on and off.

He sent to workshop to check in Cheras Auto BMW and they found that his gearbox oil was milky, apparently water had been getting into his gbox throught the radiator. Apparantly there is a gbox radiator that is next to the normal radiator and if the gasket leaks, then water gets in.

He then took it to AB for check in Cyberjaya and they confirmed it. Told him to live with the problem and change gbox oil every 50,000 kms or change gbox oil for RM27,000.

His is a 2001 e46 318i, silver will full AB history until last year and only 70,000 kms on the clock.

How the hell did that happen? We need to know how to avoid things like this.
